National Youth Leadership Forum :]

Has anybody heard of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine? Will it really “enhance my already impressive scholastic crudentials and allow me to highlight my attendance at the Forum when applying to TOP colleges and universities?” Just wondering if it is worth the trip to Washington DC, plus i’m already considering summer courses at Vanderbilt or Duke TiP. THANKS!

i have heard about it, my friend actually went there i think his sophomore year, from wat he said it was a good experience but its not really seen as very prestigious or anything, so don’t go for that purpose or to put on your college app… but summer courses are definetly great…

I had friends go and I asked them when I was considering going. They told me it was fun, but nothing really special like the letter makes it seem. I think you’ll be better off with your courses at Duke/Vanderbilt.

thanks everyone. I’ll probably go just for fun, in addition to increasing my currently non-existing “relationship” with my gc.

It’s nothing special
Everyone is invited
Find a real EC

it’s in haiku!

I say do it if you think you will enjoy it. Don’t worry about whether or not it’s a “real EC” as the above poster claims. I don’t even understand that…I guess as oppossed to real, the NYLC is fake? Please…

Honestly, if you will enjoy it, see yourself fitting in to the program, and think you will learn from the experience, go ahead and do it! It’ll probably a lot more fun than summer college courses (trust me, they’re not as great as they’re cracked up to be ;))

This program and similar offerings really bug me. The programs are expensive and prey on naive students. The invitation is lovely and it sounds like a real honor (same with the Who’s Who listings) but it is worthless on a college app. Anyone with an unweighted average of 3.0 or better is accepted, barring any glaring moral/criminal issues and that your check clears. Participating in this program absolutely will not “enhance your already impressive scholastic credentials and allow you to highlight your attendance at the Forum when applying to TOP colleges and universities.” The college admissions staffers at the top schools know the difference between open admissions summer programs (aka camp) and the selective programs. Go if the program components truly interest you and the fees are not a stretch financially. Otherwise, don’t bother.

Duke TIP is selective. Spending three weeks on the Duke campus will also provide you with background info for your Duke supplemental essays.

i went to the NYLF Medicine at Emory before my junior year. it was really fun and a great experience, but like the above posters said, it is not hard to get into and is expensive. it was just a good experience to be able to meet people and live in dorms. i would not do it just to enhance you apps because it probably won’t.

I went to the NYLF Medicine in Arizona before my junior year. It was fun and I met a lot of people from around the US, as well as learned some things about Medicine, but as far as enhancing an app., it won’t. If you can get into TIP, then do it, but if really, the choice is yours. I’m sure you’ll have fun if you choose to go to NYLF or TIP.

Yeah I’m sure it will mostly be just a fun experience, but some of you seem to condemn NYLF in the same category as National Honor Roll or Who’s Who, which are just plain scams. Is NYLF a scam, or rather not “prestigious”? I obviously have some “real ECs” too, including a college-level hospital internship, and the regular school stuff:debate, tennis,NHS,student government, MAO, etc… +a 4.0 blahblahblah

ummm what about National Youth Leadership Conference and NCSSSMST? These seem to be a really big deal at my school, but so is NYLF(definitely not as much as NCSSSMST though).

if NCSSSMST is the acronym…you might as well write out the whole thing ;)

I asked about this a couple years ago on a forum where one of the people was an admissions rep. Her reply was that these type of leadership forums that you have to pay for do not enhance your college application. Which does not however mean that it will not be a good experience.

National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics Science and Technology. Basically, my school selects 4 students to do reasearch for a few months, which my school even gives out credit for as a research class. This year’s topic is GMO foods. In June there is a large conference, which is debate-style i believe. Solutions are agreed upon and then written up in a large “polished” paper, with leadership positions being deligated as well. Last year the paper ended up getting to the White House, and was looked at by congress. If i do this one i will be giving up most of my summer, so it better be good. ha

I’ve been selected for the program this year, but I’m considering dropping it because I was really interested in the biotech topic. There’s probably better things for me to do with my time.

Duke TIP is crazy fun, but I don’t think it’s going to get you in if you weren’t already qualified. I did TIP for three years but didn’t even bother putting it on my app. I just forgot about it.

Hmm, I was nominated for that too. I dunno if I’ll go now. lol

My daughter was just ‘nominated’ for the medicine program. To me it is reminincent of the whole People to People Student Ambassadors program. Nominate everyone, and see who is willing to pay. Very impressive mailing, though!
