Native son will lead U.S. forces in Iraq

<p>Army Lt. Gen. David Howell Petraeus, President Bush’s pick to head American military forces in Iraq, has a reputation around the Army as a hard-nosed intellectual and tough competitor.</p>

<p>A soccer star and expert skier, the native New Yorker graduated from the U.S. Military Academy near the top of his class in 1974. When he left, he took the post superintendent’s daughter as his wife.</p>

<p>I?ve read a book called ?In the Company of Soldiers: A Chronicle of Combat? by Rick Atkinson. The author was with the division led by Gen. Petraeus at the time. From the book you get an idea of his personality and leadership style.</p>
