Natural Science

Please let me know what you know about Natural science faculty at Fordham LC. My son was accepted but we don’t have information how good it is. How is student research?

The natural sciences at Fordham are not the best, but that isn’t to say that they are bad by any means. I’m a Chem major right now and I can tell you that the program is challenging and rigorous. Most don’t survive. The science facilites (specifically Biology and Chemistry) leave alot to be desired. But Fordham is in the finals planning stages of building it’s new science center. This will help alot. In terms of reserach, there are some positions to be had within the university, specifially for Biology majors. Fordham owns a 144 acre Biological research center about 70 miles north of the Rose Hill Campus. I have a few friends who have found research assistant opportunities with current professors there over the summer. Also, there are many research opportunities, again for Biology Majors, at the Bronx Zoo. In fact, Fordham has a partnership with the Bronx Zoo and many many students intern there.

All in all, the Fordham sciences are good. The professors are great, which is the most important part. A $4000 microscope isn’t going to help you learn about microscopic structures any better than a $3000 microscope will. Trust me, you’ll be challenged.

The FCLC Natural Sciences major is really challenging and competitive. The 14 students that graduate from the program usually get into top-notch schools, such as Cornell, NYU and Harvard. There are plenty of research opportunities at Rose Hill and New York City. Many of the professors, like my Physics professor, are still continuing their research (in the case of my Physics Professor, he is researching the Quantum Theory.) The major requirements are listed in the course bulletin on the Fordham website.

Here’s site for faculty research “Inside Fordham” http://www.fordham.edu/campus_resources/public_affairs/inside_fordham/

The NS major is promising, but rigorous.
