Nava Academy Appointment

BGO Newsletter issued 26 March 2010.

Hah,caught it third time. Never thought to look under the new Commandant announcement. Still, it is just a ‘canned’ list of important dates. I haven’t seen any verbage since the announcement that they were running behind. Also, can’t find my source for board meeting thru the 15th.

Again, from the other forum, someone mentioned talking to admissions yesterday and said something would be mailed to everyone by April 15. Thus, it might be several days post April 15 until the envelopes, thin or fat, reach everyone!

not sure we are looking in the same place…

If you have access to BGIS, scroll through the March bulletins and then open up the BGO newsletter referenced. Granted, a list of upcoming dates and deadlines, but there is specific information addressing the status of the admission reviews, and an update to the previous notice that they were running behind.

Hang in everyone.

West Point should not be pressuring your son to make a decision any earlier than what the advertised deadline is in his appointment packet. They’re not going to rescind it prior to the deadline date so there should be nothing to worry about. Wait to the last minute if that suits you.

The general consensus seems to be to ignore the MALO’s request and wait until May. For those, and for Eackkev, I invite you to read what WP admissions has to say this year. See Post # 53:
[National Waiting List - Page 6 - United States of America Service Academy Forums](http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=11020&page=6)
They have overextended. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR EXCUSES NOT TO OFFER APPOINTMENTS. A hypothetical situation: Should a candidate receive a speeding ticket tomorrow, would you rather be a candidate with an appointment or one without? Another: When you call WP Admissions next week with a sprained wrist, would you rather be a candidate with an appointment or one without? Just something to think about.

…are nothing short of despicable. It’s baloney. Remember WHO nominates these outstanding young people.

When the proverbial down-under (not Australia) freezes over, will a young person lose his appointment because of a sprained wrist …

Stir the pot, brew and twubble …mombee’s stew brew and bubble…

btw, NOT EXTENDING an appointment is a world different than rescinding one already offered … for an ingrown toenail, might we agree. Let’s get real and quit trying to use this OPs concern to expose our keen insights or lack there of. Fear-mongering in this instance is a poor way to provide alleged counsel.

Thanks for this insight.

Honestly - West Point is overbooked this year. By all accounts from a Regional Commanding Admissions officer.
Maj Belmont himself said - all appointees need to keep their nose clean. If you get a speeding ticket, arrested or another infraction with the law they can and may recind your appointment because it would cause them to chase a legal waiver for you. If you fail a course - they can and may recind an appointment.
IF You fail to respond by May 1st - they can and may recind your appointment. In prior years, the Regional Commanders would personally call appointees who have not responded - this year they may not call but simply send a thanks but no thanks letter.
Legal waivers, late medical waivers - may not be available this year. If you were offered an appointment in Dec but haven’t accepted it by April and you need a legal/medical waiver - admission may be scratching their head.

ALL appointments are conditional until R-day/I-day.

…that we might all understand?

Nothing has changed. Nothing at all.

Except that USMA has misfed their formulae …and now are feeding stuff like this to bail them out.

I’ll stick to the right, high road, confident USMA will do exactly the same. Do what they say …nose clean, keep studying, no back seat frivolity or pedal to the metal in your dad’s convertible, and let us know by May 1.

And they will do the honorable thing, expecting none less from candidates.

So, don’t imply or suggest with …

Of course they are. As always. Again …NOTHING has changed.

And just like always, absent of rescindable offenses …every single appointment will be honored. Count on it.

btw, the word is “rescind” X 3. And I’ll assume your mistake is mere ignorance or mediocre education.

Or did you mean re-sinned?:p

Whistle Pig - I can’t speak for Navy, but my husband is at the MALO conference at WP right now. As mombee said, they are confirming that they are overextended for this class. Never saw this stat before, but they apparently gave 500 (!!) LOA’s this year! Again as said, they are looking for ANY EXCUSE to cut the class right now - even for appointments currently extended. He said they mentioned that a running joke in admissions right now is that (in reference to grades) D & F stand for “done and finished”! It’s not a scare tactic - it’s apparently very real and very true for WP. As of about a month ago they WERE mentioning possibly moving up the deadline from May 1 to accept. Sounds like this won’t happen now, but it WAS mentioned from admissions out to MALO’s. The MALO’s aren’t trying to scare their candidates but simply make sure they don’t get left out in the cold. Bottom line is that this is not the year to screw up - whether it’s by bad grades, some kind of conduct issues, or simply not doing the required paperwork. They’ve notified MALO’s that they’re cutting off Dodmerb as of April 15th - if you don’t have a waiver by then, you’re out of luck. As far as I know, this has never happened before.

I do think things have changed for this year. Maybe not at Navy. But definitely at West Point. They mentioned they normally have the highest acceptance rate (of offers) in the country at around 81 percent. This year they’re above 90 percent! Yes, WP will honor all appointments. IF the candidates don’t screw up. Even last year the attitude was that a speeding ticket or a D was no big deal. That is not the case this year.

At this point all we can do is see how it all plays out, but it’s certainly not overly cautious to recommend that anyone with an appointment hoping to attend WP does accept by May 1, makes an effort to not get hurt, and doesn’t have any conduct or academic issues. Use common sense, but the appointment may not be the “golden ticket” it was in past years!

I’ve heard stories that the Naval Academy gets calls as late as the week before I-Day with regards to a rejection of an appointment. I have no idea what circumstances cause that to happen. I don’t even know if they are Urban Legends. But I’ve heard those stories several times.

People who have previously accepted an appointment by the deadline CAN change their mind at the last minute. Accepting the appointment is not a binding agreement.

Nothing is binding until the Oath on I-Day and truthfully, really nothing until the first class of 2nd class year.

USNA Admissions commenced using a waiting list system about 4-5yrs ago in order to, among other things, be able to alleviate the consequences of last minute changes.

2 questions regarding plebes:

1.) If you wear contact lenses, do they MAKE you instead wear those ridiculous huge plastic frame glasses that I see in the plebe summer photos? Or will they just let you wear your contacts? If glasses only…why?? And what about after plebe summer…if the glasses are mandatory for the summer, can you go back to contacts during the rest of plebe year?

2.) After the 51 days of plebe summer that starts on 7/1, how much time is there until classes begin? Are plebes, if somewhat local to Annapolis, allowed to leave the yard then for a short break?

Thanks

Yep

Yep

Nope

Once the Brigade reforms in August, and plebe summer is offically over, plebes get a limited amount of town liberty during plebe year [typically, Saturday noon until around 10 or so… changes each year, but close enough]. Town liberty, for many years, included all that space “within a 22 mile limit of the Navy Chapel Dome” [as the Blue Angels fly]. This past year, the limit was extended a bit to around 30 miles, putting Washington DC and Baltimore in play. Anyway, town liberty gives you a chance to go to your sponsor’s home, or to your own if it is within the defined limits. [with a new Dant just on board, no doubt the limits will be revisited again]

On Sundays, you are restricted to the yard. Under special circumstances, you can apply for a chit for a weekend… you may even “earn” a weekend as a class…which means you get to spend an overnight off the yard.

Note that ALL of this is considered secondary, optional and conditional, meaning it can happen, might happen, may not happen, etc… ALL subject to change, the needs of the USNA, the needs of your COMPANY, etc.
