Naval Academy 2015 Summer Stem Program

My 10th-grade son received a brochure for a one-week “Summer 2015 STEM Program” from the Naval Academy. I’m not sure how they get names for their mailing list. He had a very good eighth-grade ACT score (30) and I’m pretty sure he expressed an intention to major in engineering on the ACT application. He’s also had strong PSAT scores, but not high enough to earn NM Finalist yet (I know an 8-10th grade PSAT doesn’t count, but it would be nice to have already made the cutoff score). Does anyone know how they get these names?

My son is an outstanding student academically but not an athlete, and is slightly overweight. He wears glasses. Quite honestly, I’m not sure he’s Naval Academy material. On the other hand, the program certainly looks interesting from the standpoint of just knowing more about what opportunities are out there. My son attended a single Duke TIP summer program after eighth grade and came home a changed and far more motivated student.

The program only lasts four nights and costs $425, so it isn’t a huge expense in terms of either time or money. I’m just curious if anyone has any experience or comments about this. Thanks.

Here’s the link to the program brochure:

It is a great program at minimal cost. In years past, it used to be free, but I guess everything changes with the budget cuts. That said, it is still a great deal at $425. It is considered an honor to get selected to go. I know kids who have gone in the past and loved it.

My son, when he got the brochure as a soph. applied and did not get in. He was so qualified we were pretty surprised. I would say go ahead and apply, but keep in mind they will be doing alot of physical stuff, and my son was like yours originally, but then took up running, so was in great shape. I believe they either get the info from Duke tip, ACT or the PSAT, all of which my son took and he thought they had questions about engineering interest. I have heard, since then, that a lot of kids who get in are engaged in ROTC or something else similar.

I got the answer to my own question about where they get the names from their website. A big source is ACT and PSAT scores. Many ninth and tenth graders haven’t even taken these tests, so I would say this is a benefit of participating in Duke TIP or similar programs, as well as a good reason to take the PSAT every year.

My son who is a freshman applied to the USNA STEM program January 11th. He has strong grades and extracurriculars, including sports. I am really interested in seeing what happens, and I’m hoping that getting his application filed early helps. Do kids apply from all over the country or is it mostly an East Coast group? What other stem programs do kids apply to? Thanks for any info!

Kids apply from all over the country, and NOT being from the mid-Atlantic states is a boost. STEM and Summer Seminar are about marketing as much as anything else, and there’s less need to market to students who can easily visit Annapolis. Early applications do seem to help, too. Good luck to your son.

BTW, my son was not accepted to Summer Seminar (very strong academics/test scores/athlete but lives in Washington, DC area) and still received an appointment. So NOT getting in is not an indicator of future admissions success.

My daughter is 8th grader, she just received acceptance letter from the Naval summer stem program.

Are people hearing now from STEM? Our son is a freshman, filed in January, and is constantly checking his email hoping to hear!

My child took part in USNA STEM camp as a middle schooler. It was a good experience, though not terribly challenging. It is not a “boot camp” type program, so no need to worry about physically demanding for non-athletes.

Same as 8632sarah, have people heard back from STEM? I applied January 20 for the program as a rising 10th grader have yet to receive an email notifying me of an acceptance or rejection. I am aware that the latest date for indication is May 1, but I’d like to know if people have received their confirmation. Thanks.

My daughter is a rising 10th grader. Attends private school in Chicago. She was accepted to the USNA summer stem program, but sadly others from her school were not.
4.22 GPA. Plays hockey and was in model UN.
I am not sure what they really look at.
Does anyone know how many applications USNA receives each year?

When did you find out? My daughter is a rising 10th grader and has not heard anything yet. Was it an email?

They asked for a payment beginning of April. I did not realize that was the acceptance.

Good luck!

I am just wondering is anyone accept to USNA stem program from MASS?

I finally called the Admissions Office today. They told me that some rejections and some acceptances had been sent out, but not all. We’re still waiting here in California (rising 10th).

Still waiting in Oregon, too, for session 3. Really hoping to hear something good tomorrow. Good luck to all your kids!

Hi everyone, have anyone rising 10th graders from New Jersey been notified? I applied in early January and am still waiting anxiously.

People just started receiving rejection emails this afternoon. Bummer!

Argh. Still waiting word w/ a rising sophomore in California. But it’s almost 5:00 on the East Coast. Does anyone have a sense as to whether the bulk of candidates have been informed?
