ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior women’s cross country runner Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) won the Star Meet for the second-consecutive year to lead the Midshipmen to a 21-38 N-Star win over Army at the USNA Cross Country Course on Saturday morning.

The Midshipmen wrap up their regular season with a 5-0 record in dual-meet action, while the Black Knights dropped to 0-2.

Navy registered five of the seven-fastest times to bring the N-Star back to Annapolis for the first time since 2000. The Midshipmen improved their all-time advantage over the Black Knights to 12-9, including an 8-3 mark on the USNA Cross Country Course.

“I’m so excited and am really happy for our team today,” stated Navy head coach Karen Boyle. “It’s really unprecedented to have eight seniors, all healthy and finishing in the top-12. This group has been our pride and joy for four years. To see them go out of this meet on top with the N-Star, it’s really a great feeling.”

Whipple posted the third-fastest time in course history, second-best time by a Navy runner, with her 22:15.13 showing. One year after claiming first at the 2005 Star Meet by 37.34 seconds, the Navy senior finished 40.34 seconds ahead of Army’s top runner, Meghan Curran. Whipple has posted Navy’s fastest time in each of her last-10 races, including three overall first-place performances.

Fellow senior Emily Castro (Centennial, Colo.) followed Whipple with a 22:54.33 clocking to edge out Curran for second-place. Castro’s time ranks as the ninth-fastest in course history and the third-best by a Navy runner. The product of Centennial, Colo., has finished among Navy’s top-two runners in every meet this season.

Senior Allison Barlow (Orange Park, Fla.) crossed the finish line in 23:05.18, sixth-best by a Midshipmen runner in course history, for Navy’s third-place time and fifth overall. Junior Kyleigh Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) followed in sixth with a 23:15.36 showing and sophomore Maureen Dooley (Durham, Conn.) rounded out the Navy scoring with her seventh-place time of 23:17.16.

Senior Juliann Jordan (Kanehoe, Hawai’i) completed the race in 23:30.20 for ninth place, while freshman Kaitlin Baker (Rockford, Mich.) placed 10th with her 23:47.38 time to serve as Navy’s displacing runners.

The Midshipmen return to action with the Patriot League Championship on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Colgate’s Harry Lang Course in Hamilton, N.Y. Navy was picked to finish third at this year’s league championship in the preseason poll after finishing fifth at last season’s championship.

Beat Army!!!

More good news from the Men’s Cross Country team: :)

Navy’s John Kress finishes 18.67 seconds ahead of Army’s top runner

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy junior men’s cross country runner John Kress (Colorado Springs, Colo.) crossed the finish line in 24:33.22 to top all runners and lead the Midshipmen to a 22-33 N-Star victory over Army on Saturday morning at the USNA Cross Country Course.

The Midshipmen recorded five of the seven-fastest times to finish the regular season with a 1-0 record in dual-meet action, while the Black Knights fell to 0-2. Navy upped its record to 42-27-1 against Army, including an impressive 23-3-1 mark against the Black Knights in Annapolis.

“We were lucky to win today, because I felt that coming in that they were a very talented team,” stated Navy head coach Al Cantello, who earned his Naval Academy-record 29th N-Star win at the helm of the cross country program. “However, that is why we run the race. Our guys really stepped it up and came through with some good performances.”

Kress’ 24:33.22 showing placed him 18.67 seconds ahead of Army’s top-finisher, Dan O’Loughlin. The Navy junior posted a time of 4:32 in the opening mile of the race and nearly missed finishing among Navy’s top-25 times in course history. Kress has posted the team’s fastest time in three of the last-four meets.

Junior John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) soon followed with a 24:54.11 showing to place third overall. Olsen has finished among Navy’s top-two runners in each of the last-five meets. Two weeks ago at the Notre Dame Invitational, he led the team with a nearly-identical 24:54 clocking.

Fellow junior Lucas Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.) emerged as Navy’s third-fastest runner and guided a pack of three Midshipmen that ensured their N-Star victory. Burke completed the race in 25:05.16 to land fifth overall, followed by senior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) in sixth place with a 25:14.12 and senior team captain Adam Craig’s (Commerce, Mich.) 25:17.21 effort to finish seventh.

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Navy swimming and diving programs each enjoyed a successful first day of the 2006-07 dual meet season Saturday in Baltimore, with both programs posting victories over Loyola, Catholic and George Washington.

The Navy men posted a 207-83 win over George Washington, defeated Loyola by a score of 184-99 and beat Catholic 223-61.

“We had a very good team effort today, especially from our new swimmers who were competing on the collegiate level for the first time,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts. “We received a number of good swims for this early in the season.”

The Navy women’s team recorded a 176.5-112.5 victory over the host Greyhounds, topped the Colonials by a score of 185-83 and defeated the Cardinals 207-55.

“We received good swims all around,” said Navy women’s swimming head coach John Morrison. “Our freshmen followed up a strong showing at last night’s Potomac Relays with more good swims today. I was really pleased with how we performed as a team today. It was fun and exciting to see so many swimmers put up good times in a lot of different events.”

Highlighting the day for both Navy teams was the performances of divers Kevin Teague (Sr., Lexington, Ky.) and Katie Griffin (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.), both of whom set new pool records Saturday.

Teague won both boards with scores of 312.23 on the one meter and 311.40 on the three meter, with both scores setting new Mangione Aquatic Center standards. Griffin, meanwhile, posted a new pool record score of 267.3 in winning the one-meter competition.

In addition to Teague and Griffin, a combined 14 Navy swimmers posted at least one individual event victory on the day for the men’s and women’s teams. Multiple event winners for the women’s team were Thuy-Mi Dinh (Fr., Anaheim, Calif.) in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle and Tara Chapmon (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle, while Cody Reeb (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) won the 500 and 1000 freestyle events for the men’s team.

Both Navy programs will open the home portion of their respective seasons Oct. 21 when the teams play host to Johns Hopkins in Lejeune Hall. The men’s meet will begin at 11 a.m., with the women’s meet to follow at 1 p.m.

Congrats Mids! We know how you feel, my wife and I watched Army XC beat both men’s and women’s Navy at West Point last year in the pouring rain. It’s a great rivalry!
