St. Francis Edges Navy in ECAC Tournament

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 13-ranked Navy water polo fell behind early, then saw its rally end up just short in an 8-7 loss to St. Francis (N.Y.) in the ECAC Tournament finals on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Navy’s record to 10-5 overall, as it enters league play next weekend.

Navy fell behind 2-1 after one quarter and was forced to play from behind all day. The Terriers led 3-2 at halftime and 7-5 after three quarters. The Mids outscored St. Francis, 2-1, in the final quarter, but couldn’t draw even and saw its modest four-game winning streak end.

Mike Mulvey led the way with four goals. Bram Arnold and Andrew Bingham scored a goal and assist each, while Tyler Hill dished out two helpers. Aaron Recko scored Navy’s other goal. Defensively, George Naughton had an outstanding performance in the net, making 15 saves, before being replaced by Steve Craney, who stopped four shots.

The Mids will play Princeton, Bucknell and St. Francis (N.Y.) next weekend on the road.

Navy Volleyball to Play Tuesday at Loyola

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy volleyball team will try to snap a two-match losing streak Tuesday night when the Midshipmen travel to Baltimore to face Loyola in a 7 p.m. match.

The Mids have played very well over their last two matches against Army and American, but still came away with losses in both outings. Navy lost a four-game decision to the Black Knights in West Point and a five-game contest to the Eagles last Friday night in Macdonough Hall.

“I am a firm believer in that hard works eventually pays off,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “Even though we haven’t had the success we wanted to over the last two matches, we worked very hard and played very well in both matches against the two best teams in our league. We can’t become frustrated by the two losses. If we bring that same effort every night and are able to clean up a few things here and there, the results we are looking for will come.”

Navy’s latter match against American marked the first time the Mids were able to extend the Eagles to five games since the two teams began meeting twice a season in 2001. The Mids won the opening game over the Eagles by the score of 30-28, then American evened the match at one game apiece with a 30-14 win in game number two. Navy held a slim lead through the latter half of game three and served for the game at both 29-28 and 30-29, but eventually lost the set by the count of 33-31. The Mids then forced a fifth game with a 30-20 win in the fourth game.

Navy would take a 7-6 lead in the fifth game before American went on a 5-1 run to pull away from the Mids.

Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) led Navy against American with a season-high 24 kills, while Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) added a career-high 23 kills against the Eagles. Sims also hauled in 13 digs in the match to record her seventh double-double of the season. Also having a strong night on defense for Navy was setter Marissa Watson (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif.) with a career-high 18 digs, libero Aimee’ Burns (Sr., Dallas, Texas) with 16 digs and Dougherty with four blocks.

The loss to the Eagles dropped Navy’s overall record on the season to 11-6 and its Patriot League record to 1-2.

Both Navy and Loyola appear to be different teams from the ones who met last year in Annapolis when the Mids posted a 30-24, 30-20, 30-24 victory over the Greyhounds. Navy’s 11 wins through September already matches its win total for all of the 2006 season. Loyola, meanwhile, posted a 10-26 overall record and a 7-11 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record last season, but enters Tuesday’s match with a 12-8 record on the year and a 4-2 mark in league matches this fall.

Among the results for the Greyhounds this year are wins over George Washington (three games), Marist (five games) and Holy Cross (five games) and losses to North Carolina State (four games) and Lafayette (four games).

Freshman Nina Camioni, who was tabbed as this week’s MAAC Rookie of the Week, leads the Loyola offense with an average of 3.40 kills per game and ranks first on the team among six-rotation players with 3.66 digs per game. Sophomore Karlee Woodward stands second to Camioni offensively with 2.71 kills per game and is first on the squad with both a .322 hitting percentage and a 1.01 blocks-per-game average. Freshman Brittany Born is pacing the Greyhounds with a 4.68 digs-per-game average.

Five players on the Loyola team are averaging multiple kills per game this season.

Woodward led all players during last year’s match between the Mids and the Greyhounds with 18 kills and a .600 attack percentage. Sims totaled 12 kills, hit .478 and grabbed a match-high 13 digs for Navy, while teammates Dougherty and Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) combined for 19 kills and a .468 hitting percentage.

Bresnahan Named Patriot League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore center back Lauren Bresnahan
(Weston, Fla.) has been named the Patriot League Brine Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Bresnahan, who is receiving the honor for the second time in her career, is the first Navy women’s soccer player to be honored by the league this fall.

A two-year starter on Navy’s defensive unit, Bresnahan led the Midshipmen to a pair of victories last week, including Navy’s fourth shutout of the year. She opened the week by contributing on both ends of the field in the Mids’ 2-1 victory over VMI. Following a perfectly placed corner kick in the box by
sophomore midfielder Brittany White (Carmel, Ind.), Bresnahan fought her way though a scrum in front of the goal long enough to gain control of the ball and boot in the game-tying goal in the 22nd minute. It was just the second goal of her collegiate career and the first this fall. Five days later, Bresnahan spearheaded a defensive effort that held Saint Francis (Pa.) without a shot on goal en route to a 1-0 Navy victory.

Navy’s defense surrendered a combined nine shots in the two games, including three on goal (all three taken by VMI).

“Lauren is our leader in the back, and she has great pride in how we play
defensively each game,” said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. “We had a very solid defensive performance against Saint Francis (Pa.), and we will rely on this presence through all of our Patriot League games. Lauren has been great at 1v1 defending, dominant in the air and very organized in our defensive shape.”

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Friday when they open up Patriot League play against Bucknell. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Varsity Soccer Field in Lewisburg, Pa.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior defensemen Brett Copare and Will Riordon scored goals 2:22 apart early in the first half and Navy cruised to a 3-0 win on Tuesday night over Philadelphia University. The win moves Navy’s record to 5-2-1 overall, matching the win total for all of last year. The 5-2-1 mark through eight games is the program’s best since 2001 (5-1-2).

“It was nice to get off to such a strong start. We knew the longer they stayed in the game, the more confidence they would gain, so we wanted to get off fast,” said Navy head coach Rich Miranda. “It allowed us to relax and play everyone. It’s important for us to get our young guys some experience and we were able to do that for the second time in two weeks.”

Navy wasted little time getting on the board, scoring on its first three shots of the game. Brett Copare (Pittsgrove, N.J.) scored his first career goal on a pretty give-and-go with Eric Gorden (Longwood, Fla.). Gorden received a pass from Copare, then dropped it back to the senior defenseman, who slid a low, hard shot just inside the right post for a 1-0 advantage just 3:18 into the game. The assist was Gorden’s third of the season and seventh of his career.

The Mids pushed the lead to 2-0 just two minutes, 22 seconds later, when Will Riordon (Oak Ridge, N.C.) scored his first career goal. Riordon sent a shot into the box that was deflected off a Philadelphia defender and into the goal just inside the left post. The unassisted goal came at the 5:40 mark.

Navy’s last goal came off a corner kick in the 19th minute. Travis King (Loveland, Ohio) flicked in a perfect cross from sophomore Mark Garcia (Tempe, Ariz.) past the Ram goalkeeper. King’s goal was his second of the season and eighth of his career. Garcia’s helper was his third of the season and fourth of his career.

Navy then coasted the rest of the way, threatening to extend the lead, but were unable to find the back of the net.

“I thought we came out extremely flat in the second half, which was discouraging,” said Miranda. “We challenged them in the locker room to come out with the same intensity, and we didn’t do it. We didn’t respond in the second half.”

Thomas Jenkins (Franklin, N.C.) stopped two shots in goal to earn his third career shutout and run his career record to 7-3-1.

“Thomas has been playing well in practice and deserved the chance. He has gained back a lot of confidence from his injury last year,” said Miranda. “He and (Evan) Barnes are really still battling it out for that goalkeeper position.”

The Mids dominated statistically, outshooting the Rams, 16-6, and were whistled for just 10 fouls to Philadelphia’s 15. Both teams recorded four corner kicks.

Navy will return to Patriot League play when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for a key early-season matchup with 2007 preseason favorite, Lehigh. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm.

Loyola Defense Stops Navy

BALTIMORE, Md. - Loyola’s Karlee Woodward totaled 11 blocks and the Greyhounds tallied 18.0 team blocks on their way to recording a three-game victory over the Navy volleyball team, Tuesday night at Reitz Arena in Baltimore, Md. Loyola improves to 13-8 on the season with the 30-28, 30-19, 30-28 win, while Navy drops its third-straight match and falls to 11-7 on the year with the loss.

“We just never found a rhythm on offense tonight,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "Even moving some people around didn’t work against Loyola’s block.

“We did not play the same way we have recently, and that was disappointing. Hopefully we learned a lot about ourselves tonight and we will be ready to apply those lessons in practice over the next few days and be ready to go with a lot of emotion and confidence this weekend.”

The opening game saw the score tied at 25-25 when Loyola ran off three-straight points on a block and a pair of kills to take a 28-25 lead. The Mids then went on a 3-0 run of their own to tie the game for a seventh time at 28-28 on a Loyola service error, a bad set by the Greyhounds and a kill from Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.). The game ended, however, with another Loyola block and an attack error from Gibbs.

The Greyhounds held a lead of three-to-four points through most of game two, then broke open the game when a 5-0 run boosted their advantage to 27-19.

Game three would be tied a total of 10 times, including at 25-25 and 28-28, just as in the opening game. Also as in game one, Loyola’s 3-0 run to take a 28-25 lead was followed by three-straight points by the Mids. This time the Greyhounds used back-to-back kills to close out the contest.

Loyola’s 18.0 blocks helped hold Navy to a .116 hitting percentage on the night. The Mids were fairly effective against the Greyhounds offense, totaled 8.0 team blocks and limiting Loyola to a .213 attack percentage.

Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) led Navy with 12 kills and 15 digs.

The Mids will return to Patriot League play this weekend with matches Friday against Bucknell (7 p.m.) and Saturday against Colgate (4 p.m.) in Macdonough Hall.

Two Sides to Navy-Maryland Series
By
Bill Wagner
Annapolis Capital Navy Sports Blog

I woke up this morning to a report in The (Baltimore) Sun and The Washington Post that Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow had given up on attempts to schedule a football game with Navy in 2010. It appears both newspapers contacted Yow and wrote brief stories after reading a message board post by Terrapin Times editor/publisher Keith Cavanaugh on his website.
Cavanaugh had apparently spoken with Yow and gotten word the Terrapins were at an impasse in contract negotiations with Navy and would now be going in a different direction.

I contacted Yow and basically heard the same message that was reported by the other news outlets. Yow said Maryland has been trying for several years to lock down a game with Navy for the 2010 season opener and that Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk has been dragging his feet on giving a final answer.

“We want to play Navy in the 2010 season opener, but we have received no response from Navy and we need to move forward,” Yow said this morning during a break in Atlantic Coast Conference meetings. “Time is of the essence. We are very late in the scheduling game. We need to fill that open date and move forward.”

An hour later, I spoke with Gladchuk and heard a completely different story. Gladchuk said Navy and Maryland agreed in principle to play the game in 2010 and that Yow quickly backed out of the deal.

“I received a letter in August from Maryland committing to the game under the conditions that were discussed and a few days later I received an e-mail from Debbie Yow saying the deal was off the table,” Gladchuk said.

Gladchuk revealed that he subsequently proposed playing a two-game series with Maryland in 2010 and 2014. That offer, which called for each school to serve as host, provided “equitable guarantees and equitable conditions” for both sides, Gladchuk said.

Gladchuk said Maryland has not responded to the offer of a two-game series. “I’ve gotten mixed signals from Maryland about closing the deal on this. I’ve been consistent from day one that Navy is willing to play this game under the right conditions,” Gladchuk said. “To me, a two-game series that is equitable to both sides is a no-brainer.”

Clearly, there are two sides to this story and it appears there is some gray area in between. Maryland and Yow basically claim Navy doesn’t want to continue the series. Gladchuk and Navy vehemently dispute that assertion and say just the opposite is true.

Gladchuk, clearly annoyed this type of business is being played out in the media, says he has correspondence that backs up his version of events. If Maryland and Navy are both willing to play one another in football, what is the hold up? One can only conclude the two athletic departments have been unable to agree on the terms and conditions of such a game or games. That seems hard to believe since it’s a virtual certainty the two schools would split the revenue evenly.

Both Yow and Gladchuk said this morning they remain open to the possibility of signing a contract for a future Maryland-Navy football game. Stay tuned.

Navy Lights to Open Fall Racing Season Sunday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy lightweight crew team will begin the fall portion of its season Sunday when the Midshipmen compete at the Occoquan Challenge in Fairfax, Va. The 5,000-meter head race (boats racing in a single file, as opposed to side-by-side) will be held on the Occoquan Reservoir in Sandy Run Regional Park.

“This will be a great test to see how deep our squad is this year,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. “We will race four varsity lightweight eights in the open eight event. With the addition of Dartmouth and Georgetown, this race has become much more competitive and will be a great tune-up for the Head of the Charles and the Princeton Chase races later in the season. In addition to the four crews entered into the open eight race, our squad also will compete in the open four race later in the afternoon to maximize both our racing opportunity and development.”

Navy swept the top-three placings in both the open four and open-eight divisions in 2005, then placed first, third and fifth in the open-eight race and first and second in the open-four race last year.

Navy Volleyball to Play Host to Bucknell and Colgate this Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The second of four-straight weekends of home matches against Patriot League opponents for the Navy volleyball team will take place this week when the Midshipmen play host to Bucknell and Colgate in Macdonough Hall. The Mids will face the Bison Friday at 7 p.m., with Saturday’s match against the Raiders slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Navy enters the weekend tied for fifth place in the Patriot League with a 1-2 record, Bucknell is tied for third place with a 2-1 league mark and Colgate is tied for first with a 3-0 record.

“This is an important weekend for us,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We’re almost at the halfway point in our league season, so these matches mean a lot towards who will be in and who will be out of the playoffs.

“We did play well in our recent matches against Army and American, but they were still losses. As well as we played those nights, we have to play even better in all facets of our game this week to come away with victories against two teams who are ahead of us in the standings. We have to be ready to go physically, mentally and emotionally from the first point Friday.”

Navy began the league season by winning a three-game match at Holy Cross, then dropped a four-game decision at Army and suffered a five-game setback to American in Annapolis. The Mids as a team are outhitting their league opponents, .217-.181, and have averaged 2.25 aces per game while allowing opponents to average 1.67 aces per game. Navy also holds a slim advantage over its foes in both kills and digs per game, but trails in blocks per game by a 1.75-1.50 average.

Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) and Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) are pacing the Navy offense with averages of 4.42 and 4.17 kills per game, with Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) knocking down 3.25 kills per game. No one else on the Navy squad is averaging over 2.00 kills per game, however, as he aforementioned trio has accounted for 142 of Navy’s 172 kills against league opponents.
“Our student-athletes continually strive to set the standard on the playing fields, in the classroom and in Bancroft Hall,” said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. “The support and encouragement they receive through the Commandant and her staff and the academic dean’s office is extraordinary and provides tremendous motivation to be successful across the board. We are all proud to be leaders on the field, but even more so when we can prove to be leaders in the classroom as well. Our midshipmen clearly define the true meaning of student-athlete.”
