Navy Soccer Opens Patriot League Action Friday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women’s soccer team (6-3-2) will look to build upon its two-game winning streak on Friday when it travels to Pennsylvania to battle Bucknell (4-6) in both teams’ Patriot League opener. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Varsity Soccer Field in Lewisburg, Pa.

For just the second time in the last 14 years, Navy and Bucknell will square off in the Patriot League opener. The Bison defeated the Midshipmen, 3-2, in
Annapolis in the 2000 conference opener with Navy finishing the season, 3-2-1. Navy owns an all-time record of 6-6-1 in Patriot League openers, including last year’s 2-0 victory against American at home. The Mids, however, have found the road to be an uphill battle when it comes to league openers, as they have registered a 1-4-1 record, winning their lone road opener back in 1996 against Holy Cross (3-2, OT).

The Midshipmen enter Friday night’s contest against Bucknell well rested. The Mids, who produced a pair of wins last week, including a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over VMI on Sept. 25, did not play a mid-week game and instead focused on its contest against Bucknell. However, Navy head coach has high hopes that putting together back-to-back wins and playing a full 90 minutes are signs her team has turned the corner as it heads into the meat of the schedule.

In addition to the win over VMI, Navy turned in its first road win last Sunday when senior Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) found the back of the net in the 25th minute lead the Mids to a 1-0 triumph over Saint Francis (Pa.) in Pennsylvania. Navy’s defense was also impressive during the two-game stretch, giving up just nine total shots and holding Saint Francis (Pa.) without a shot on goal. Sophomore Lauren Bresnahan (Weston, Fla.) organized the defense from the center back position and was rewarded for her efforts by being named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the week.

Fox has paved the way in the scoring column for the Midshipmen with 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists. Three of Fox’s four goals have gone down as game-winners for Navy. Eleven other players have scored goals for the Mids this fall with junior forward Sam Schroth (Chester Springs, Pa.) turning in two and the remaining 10 players each contributing one goal apiece. Forward Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) and defender Jenn Dunbar (Crofton, Md.) own a team-high three assists each, as 10 total players have produced assists in 2007. Navy’s defense is surrendering 1.14 goals per game, while swatting away 67.5 percent of the shots put on goal by its foes.

While Navy has appeared to find its stride, Bucknell is in the midst of a rough spell, losing four of its last five games, including back-to-back contests against Marist and Loyola last weekend. The Bison jumped out to a solid start, claiming wins in three of their first five games, including a 5-2 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.), but has since struggled to find a “w” in the win column.

The Bison, who dealt Navy its only regular-season loss last fall and claimed a share of the league’s regular-season title, are led by rookie forward Chris Matlack and All-Patriot League forward Jennifer Dervarics who have amassed 12 points apiece. Matlack leads the team with five goals, including a pair of game-winners, while Dervarics owns a team-high four assists. Rookie forward Kelliann Doherty, a highly-recruited player for head coach Ben Landis, has also booted in four goals and added an assist for nine points this fall. After seeing action in just one contest a year ago, sophomore Kathryn Sutton has anchored the Bison out of the goal. She has allowed 17 goals (1.87) and made 44 shops (.721) in the nine games in which she has played. The defensive unit has surrendered just one first-half goal this season.

Navy leads the all-time series against the Bison, 9-5-1, despite dropping one-goal decisions in each of the last two meetings. Ironically, Navy has found the majority of its success on Bucknell’s home field, winning six of the seven contests played in Lewisburg. The Bison finally snapped the Mids’ six-game winning streak on their home field in 2005 when they handed the Mids a 4-3 loss to close out the regular season.

Following Navy’s Friday night trip to Bucknell, the Mids will return home to play host to NJIT at 5:00 pm on Sunday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Highlanders are in their first year as a Div. I team and the women’s soccer program is first women’s sport at NJIT to achieve full Div. I status.

Support Navy soccer with a family night out. The Naval Academy Athletic Association is offering a special family package for the NJIT game that consists of four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for $20.

Additionally, Sunday night is the Design-A-Sign contest where kids 12 and younger will have the opportunity to design a Navy soccer spirit poster to cheer with during the game. Materials to design the sign will be provided and at the end of the game, the Navy soccer team will pick its favorite with the winner earning a special prize.

Navy Rifle Begins 2007-08 Season on Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy rifle team, fresh off its 16th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, will begin its quest for No. 17 when it begins its 2007-08 season on Saturday with a match against the University of the Sciences at the Bancroft Rifle Range, beginning at 9:00 am. The Mids are coming off a 9-4 record last year and head coach Bill Kelley welcomes back four letterwinners, including two All-Americans, from last year’s team.

“We have been working pretty hard this year, but this year’s makeup is a lot different than last year’s,” said Kelley. “We lost a pair of four-time All-Americans in (Chris) Schneider and (Sarah) Bergman, who were very consistent over their four years. They were in the lineup every week. Now, the competition is wide open. We need some people to step up and contribute for us.”

Leading the way will be senior Josh Albright, who became Navy’s first NCAA Champion of any kind since 1996, when he won the title at last year’s NCAA Championship in the smallbore discipline. Albright led the Mids last year with an 1158.3 overall average (576.8 sb, 581.5 air). Albright is a two-time All-American, and his smallbore average from a year ago was the fifth-highest average in school history.

Albright will be aided in both guns by junior Lisa Kunzelman. Kunzelman is also a two-time All-American, who averaged 1146.2 overall a year ago (562.4 sb, 584.9 air). Her air rifle average from a year ago is the fourth-highest average in school history, and her 594 against USP on Jan. 26, 2007, was the second-highest air rifle score ever at Navy.

After the returning All-Americans in the lineup, the four-person roster gets a little tricky. In the smallbore, Kelley mentioned that senior Luke Marion and freshman Chris Burleson are candidates, while on the air rifle squad, junior Alex Karacsonyi and senior Christina Schade are possible shooters in air rifle. Kelley will be missing a key component this weekend, as senior captain Monica Amagna will miss the match due to personal reasons. She is a likely starter in both disciplines when she returns to the lineup for Navy’s next match.

“It will be difficult to replace Schneider and Bergman, but we have some shooters that can do it,” said Kelley. “However, some shooters aren’t pulling their weight and until they do, we may struggle some this year. It’s up to each shooter ro rise up and earn a spot on the counting roster. The competition will hopefully bring out the best in some of our younger shooters, and they have already put up some good scores in practice. Now, they need to carry it over into matches.”

Navy will be off for three weeks following Saturday’s match, with the next competition coming on Oct. 27 against MIT, in Cambridge, Mass.

Navy will field a five-man team, as well as two golfers will compete as individuals.

Men’s Golf Contact: Stacie Michaud (410) 293-8773

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Fresh off its dual meet victory over archrival Army last Sunday, the Navy golf team will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Delaware to take part in the Scotty Duncan Memorial. Action is slated to begin Saturday at the par-72 White Clay Creek Country Club in Stanton, Del., with the final round played on Sunday.

Delaware, the tournament host, claimed last fall’s Scotty Duncan Memorial title with a 41-over par 617, a 15-stroke advantage over second-place Drexel. Meanwhile, the Blue Hens’ Jason Bernstein defeated teammate John Jenson on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win medalist honors.

Navy’s senior class has served as the backbone this fall, as all three players have competed in the Mids’ two tournaments, as well as last weekend’s win over Army. Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) is pacing the team with his 72.0 stroke average that featured a 2-under par 69 in the final round of the Navy Fall Classic where he tied for seventh. Meanwhile team captain Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) has turned in a 73.2 average through five rounds of play and like Schoen, he has produced a low round of 69 this fall. He recorded a 3-under par 69 in the middle of the 54-hole Sea Trail/Elon Invitational on Sept. 22. Finally, Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) owns a 75.2 stroke average and produced his first career top-10 finish with a 4-over par 146 at the Navy Fall Classic.

Playing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Josh Ziska (Camarillo, Calif.) placed 52nd with a 14-over par 156 as a member of Navy’s gold team at the Navy Fall Classic. However, since the Mids’ opening tournament, Ziska has gained confidence in his swing, as well as his putting on the greens. In fact, Ziska was phenomenal in Navy’s victory over Army where he paired up with Schoen to win the doubles point and followed up the next day by easily defeating Army’s Matt Krembel, 4 &3.

The junior trio of Chip Hardie (Arnold, Md.), David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) will also represent the Midshipmen this weekend. All three won their individual matches against Army a week ago. Hardie owns Navy’s third-lowest stroke average at 73.8, followed by Miller (74.5) who has played in one of the two tournaments this fall where he posted a 4-over par 149. Hardie’s 2-under par 69 in the final round of the Navy Fall Classic pushed him up to 10th in the final standings. Wielgus produced a 6-over par 154 at the Navy Fall Classic, his lone tournament competition of the fall campaign.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy water polo team, ranked No. 13 in the nation, will open league play this weekend with three games against teams ranked in the nation’s top 20. The Mids will travel to 18th-ranked Princeton on Saturday for an 11:30 am contest, then will head west to Lewisburg, Pa., for a pair of Sunday games against 11th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.) and 14th-ranked Bucknell.

Navy, which sports a 10-5 overall record, is coming off a second-place finish at last weekend’s ECAC Tournament, in which the Mids faced off against both Bucknell and St. Francis (N.Y.). Navy topped the Bison in the semifinals, 9-7, before falling to St. Francis in the finals on Sunday, 8-7. The contests against Princeton and Bucknell will count towards the CWPA Southern Division standings, while the match-up with St. Francis is a non-league game.

Leading the Navy attack is junior Mike Mulvey with 46 points (37 g, 9 a), and is tied for ninth nationally in goals (37). He scored his 100th career goal in last Saturday’s 11-5 win over George Washington and currently has 156 career points (105 g, 51 a). Andrew Bingham has contributed 27 goals, while Aaron Recko has 19. The Mids have outscored their opponents, 160-124, ranking 16th in the country in goals per game (10.7 gpg).

Defensively, George Naughton has seen the majority of time in goal, registering 124 saves so far this year, while allowing 99 goals for a save percentage of .556. He has 591 career saves to rank third on the Navy career saves list. As a team, the Mids rank 11th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 8.3 goals per game.

Navy leads the all-time series with Princeton, 40-16, and has won seven meetings in a row against the Tigers, including all five contests last year. Navy’s last loss to Princeton, came on Oct. 1, 2005, an 8-6 setback to the Tigers.

The Mids lead the series with Bucknell, 61-9, and have won 12 straight games against the Bison, dating back to an 8-6 loss on Sept. 25, 2004.

Lastly, Navy leads the St. Francis (N.Y.) series, 13-9. Including last Sunday’s loss to the Terriers, Navy has won just two of the last seven meetings against the Terriers, dating back to the start of the 2004 season.

Navy will play Bucknell at 10:00 am and St. Francis (N.Y.) at 2:00 pm on Sunday.

Navy Men’s Soccer Travels To Lehigh For Key League Battle

Mids shoot for first Patriot League victory on Saturday.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s soccer team, ranked ninth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, will travel to Lehigh for a key Patriot League contest on Saturday night, beginning at 7:00 pm. The Mids enter the contest with a 5-2-1 record, while Lehigh, ranked fifth in the same poll, is 4-2-2 overall. Both teams are 0-1-0 in the Patriot League after suffering losses on the first weekend of league play last Saturday.

Navy matched its win total from the entire 2006 season on Tuesday night, rebounding from Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Bucknell with a resounding 3-0 triumph of Philadelphia University. The Mids scored three goals in the first 19 minutes of the contest and coasted home for the victory. Senior defensemen Brett Copare (Pittsgrove, N.J.) and Will Riordon (Oak Ridge, N.C.) tallied their first career goals just two minutes and 22 seconds apart in the first six minutes of the game, and senior forward Travis King (Loveland, Ohio) added an insurance goal in the 19th minute for a 3-0 margin. Thomas Jenkins (Franklin, N.C.) ran his career record to 7-3-1 with his third career shutout, by stopping two shots in goal.

The Mids are the top offensive team in the Patriot League, averaging 1.75 goals per game in their eight games played. Navy has scored at least two goals in four of its eight games and sit just outside the nation’s top 30 in scoring offense. Leading the way are a pair of sophomores in Andrew Garcia (Garland, Texas) and Chris Schneider (Arlington, Texas) and senior Doug DeVuono (Racine, Wis.) with six points. Garcia and DeVuono lead the team in goals with three, while Schneider has one goal and four assists. Schneider entered the week ranked 14th nationally in assists per game (0.57). Mark Garcia (Tempe, Ariz.) has contributed five points (1 g, 3 a) and King and Adam Pennington (Tampa, Fla.) have four points each.

Navy boasts a very balanced offensive lineup in that eight different players have already scored goals in eight games, matching the number of players that scored goals in 16 games all of last year. In addition, Navy has seven players that have scored at least three points, one year after having just four players tally at least three points. Lastly, Navy has four players with at least two assists, one year after having just one player with two or more assists.

Defensively, Navy has been spectacular, allowing just 0.88 goals per game on 70 shots. The Mids have allowed just 8.8 shots per game, one year after allowing 12.7 shots per game. Opponents have managed just 4.1 shots on goal per game this year. In addition, the Navy defense has recorded four shutouts in eight games to rank tied for 30th nationally in shutouts per game (0.50).

The benefactors of Navy’s stout defense have been senior goalies Evan Barnes (Dublin, Ohio) and Thomas Jenkins (Franklin, N.C.). Barnes is 3-2-1 with a 0.94 GAA and a .700 save percentage in 574 minutes, while Jenkins is 2-0-0 with a 0.50 GAA and a save percentage of .900 in 180 minutes.

Lehigh saw its six-game unbeaten streak end last Saturday against arch-rival Lafayette, 1-0, but the Mountain Hawks are just 0-1-2 in their last three games after opening the season 4-1-0 and ranked 16th in the NSCAA national poll. Lehigh has scored 12 goals in its eight games, while allowing eight. The Mountain Hawks have given up just 51 shots (6.4 shots per game) in its eight games this year and have outscored foes, 6-2, in the first half this year.

Leading Lehigh is Kyle Evans with 13 points (6 g, 1 a) and Jim Taranto with six points (1 g, 4 a). The duo has accounted for 19 of Lehigh’s 35 points (54.3 percent) this year. In goal, Brian Lee has played all 800 minutes with a GAA of 0.95 and a .704 save percentage. He has recorded three shutouts.

Lehigh is looking extend its unbeaten streak to 11 games at home against conference opponents. Its last loss was in October 2004, a 1-0 game against American. Navy, 2-0-0 on the road, is looking for its first three-game road winning streak since Sept. 9 - Oct. 13, 2001.

Navy leads the all-time series against Lehigh, 28-14-6, but is just 7-6-1 in Bethlehem. The Mountain Hawks have dominated the series as of late, winning the last seven meetings by a combined margin of 15-3. The Mountain Hawks have won nine of the last 10 overall meetings, with Navy’s lone win coming in Bethlehem on Oct. 29, 1999 (1-0), and own a 11-5-0 advantage over the Midshipmen since Navy joined the Patriot League prior to the 1991 season.

The Mids will return home next Tuesday, Oct. 9, for a non-conference battle against Howard, beginning at 7:00 pm, at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

CSFL’s Two Unbeatens Square Off in Pride Bowl XXIX on Sunday
The Navy sprint football team (2-0, 0-0 CSFL) will make the trek to the annual Pride Bowl for the seventh-consecutive year on Sunday, this time taking on Cornell (2-0, 0-0 CSFL) in a 2 p.m. kickoff. The Midshipmen sport a perfect 6-0 record in the Pride Bowl, with each of the last-five triumphs coming against Army. Navy’s first win in the Pride Bowl came at the hands of Cornell, a 42-10 decision during the 2001 campaign. The Midshipmen own an impressive 47-13-2 advantage in the all-time series over the Big Red, despite a 16-10 overtime setback last season as Cornell went on to win the CSFL Championship.

Navy Enters CSFL Play With 2-0 Mark After 30-17 Win Over Army
Navy sprint football running back Enrique Harris (Jr./Crawfordville, Fla.) ran for 160 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown to earn game MVP honors as the Midshipmen defeated Army, 30-17, in front of 4,000 fans at the Allegiance Bowl at Saratoga Springs High School Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Navy improved to 2-0 on the year and upped its winning streak to seven-consecutive games over the Black Knights. Army recorded its first loss of the year to fall to 1-1 on the young season.
“After going down 14 points in the first quarter, we outscored Army, 30-3, for the remainder of the game,” stated Navy head coach Maj. Jake Jenkins, USMC. “It was truly impressive on both fronts - being able to shut down their offense and put 30 points on the board.”
Army took a 14-0 lead in the opening-15 minutes of the contest before Navy’s defense forced turnovers on three-consecutive possessions to grab its first lead of the game, 17-14. After the Black Knights traveled 78 yards on 15 plays to knot the game at 17 to close out the first half, the Midshipmen defense limited their archrival to 74 yards of total offense for the remainder of the contest.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Navy pulled away with a steady dose of its rushing attack. Harris broke the 17-17 tie with a 47-yard touchdown scamper 17 seconds into the fourth quarter. Reifenberg tacked on a pair of field goals, 32 and 27 yards, in the final stanza to close out the scoring on the day.
Navy’s defense took advantage of six Army turnovers, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries, in scoring 23 of its 30 points on the afternoon. The Midshipmen also tallied six tackles for a loss of 19 yards and deflected away six passes in the win. Feipel led the defensive backfield with two pickoffs, the first two of his career, for 21 return yards. Linebacker Brian Smith (Jr./Gainesville, Fla.) paced the team with 10 tackles, while fellow linebacker Tyler Hawkins (So./Canyon Country, Calif.) chipped in with nine stops. Linebacker Chris Combellick (Jr./Carmel, Ind.) also intercepted a pass and delivered six tackles in the win.
The Midshipmen held a 38:31-21:29 advantage in time of possession and out-gained Army, 417-332, with 313 of those yards coming on the ground. In addition to Harris’s 160 yards, Richard Engel (Sr./Medford, N.J.) produced 90 yards on 21 carries and Nate Stewart (So./Fitzgerald, Ga.) chimed in with 41 yards on seven rushing attempts.
In his first-career start, Jon DeWitt (Jr./Mendham, N.J.) produced a touchdown on the ground and through the air. The Navy signal-caller rushed for 18 yards and completed 6-of-22 passes for 104 yards. DeWitt founded wide receiver Tommy Tellson (Jr./Bedford, Texas) two times for 44 yards, including a 34-yard connection midway through the fourth quarter.

Last Meeting … Cornell 16, Navy 10 (OT)
The Navy sprint football team dropped its CSFL opener with a 16-10 setback in overtime at Cornell on Oct. 6, 2006, at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the league, while the Midshipmen dropped to 2-1 on the year, 0-1 in league play.
Cornell snapped Navy’s 15-game winning streak entering the night, dating back to the start of the 2004 season. Navy’s last loss came at Army on Nov. 7, 2003, in a 30-25 decision.
With Navy leading 10-3 with 3:32 remaining in regulation, Cornell marched 80 yards in 11 plays, capped by a Michael Fullowan two-yard touchdown run, to tie the game and force overtime with 56 seconds showing on the clock. The Big Red kept its chances alive with a 33-yard pass from Zak Dentes to Jason Remillard on a 4th-and-13 with less than two minutes to go on Navy’s 42-yardline.
In overtime, Navy was unable to connect on its four pass attempts and turned the ball over on downs. The Big Red immediately took advantage, as Dentes delivered a 25-yard touchdown strike to Michael Brennan to give Cornell its first victory over the Mids since 1998.
The setback also halted Navy’s 38-game winning streak when holding the opposition under 20 points.

Navy Nearing 300 All-Time Wins
The Navy sprint football program enters this week’s action needing only one win to record its 300th victory in program history. The 62-year old program owns an all-time mark of 299-62-9, good for an .820 winning percentage.

Pride Bowl Perfection
The Midshipmen are making their seventh appearance in the Pride Bowl, with each of their six-previous visits resulting in victories. Each of Navy’s last-five wins have come against Army, while its other victory came at the expense of Cornell in 2001.
Navy’s six wins in Pride Bowl play are the most among undefeated teams in Pride Bowl history and the second-highest total in the game’s history (Montclair State, 7-6).

Road Warriors
The Midshipmen are scheduled to play only one game on their home field, Rip Miller Field, during the 2007 slate. The lone home contest, an Oct. 19 game against Princeton, marks the fewest home games played in a season by the Mids in the program’s 62-year history.
Meanwhile, Navy will travel more than 2,300 miles on the road and spend in excess of 40 hours on a bus going to and from its five games away from Annapolis this year.

Engel Approaching Career Rushing Touchdowns Record
Navy senior running back Richard Engel (Medford, N.J.) enters this week’s action fifth on the career rushing touchdowns list, only three shy of matching the record of 23 touchdowns held by Matt Sobecki between 1994-97.
In 19 career games, Engel has found the endzone on 20 occasions. The product of Medford, N.J., opened the year with a two-touchdown effort at Frostburg State JV on Sept. 9. He has scored two touchdowns in four of the last-six contests.
One year ago, Engel led the CSFL in rushing with 659 yards and nine touchdowns on 115 carries (5.7 ypc). Engel became the first Navy running back to win the rushing title since Sobecki churned out 984 yards in 1997.

The Kicks Are Up and Good!
Navy kicker David Reifenberg (So./Ft. Wayne, Ind.) connected on three of his four field goal attempts in a 30-17 win over Army in the Allegiance Bowl. The three field goals made matched the program record shared with four other performances, with the most recent coming from the right foot of Joey Bullen against Army on Nov. 5, 2004. Reifenberg has made five field goals on the year, one shy of tying Bullen (2004) and Andrew Mullen (1979) for fourth on the all-time list.

You’ll Have Nothing and Like It
Navy’s defense opened the 2007 campaign with a dominating performance at Frostburg State JV, posting -34 yards rushing and 36 yards of total offense. The -34 rushing yards were the fewest allowed by a Navy defense since 1996, while the 36 yards allowed on offense were tied for the second-fewest within the last-12 years. Only Navy’s 28-yard allowance at Cornell on Oct. 23, 2000, topped the Midshipmen performance in their 2007 season opener.

Stifling Defense
In their last 57 games, the Midshipmen defense has held the opposition to 20 or fewer points on 44 occasions, coming away victorious in 43 of those contests. Prior to a 16-10 setback in overtime last season at Cornell, the last time Navy lost a game in which its defense yielded less than 21 points came on Oct. 23, 1998, dropping a 17-14 decision to Penn.

Domination on Both Sides of the Ball
Navy put together a complete effort over Frostburg State JV to open the season on Sept. 9, totaling 466 yards on offense while limiting the Bobcats to a meager 36 yards. The 430-yard differential in total offense ranks as the second-highest since 1996, as the Midshipmen out-gained Princeton by 664 yards (704-40) in a 98-0 drubbing on Oct. 21, 2005.

Five Years, Five Different Starting Quarterbacks
For the fifth-consecutive year, Navy has relied on a different starting quarterback. Despite the annual turnover at the position, the Midshipmen have gone 26-2 over that span, good for a .929 winning percentage. Of the previous four starting quarterbacks, three have earned all-league honors and one (Brian Nagle, 2004) was named the league MVP.

Navy Launching an Aerial Attack
The Midshipmen passing attack racked up 282 yards in their season-opening win at Frostburg State JV on Sept. 9, the most passing yards since a 361-yard performance at Penn on Oct. 28, 2005. D.J. Green (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) accounted for 225 of those yards, a career high, during his first-career start with a pair of touchdown strikes in just over one half of action.

Thirty a Game Leaves Opponents at Bay
The Midshipmen have come away victorious in 40-straight games in which they score over 30 points. Navy has surpassed the 30-point mark in 40 of its last-81 games.

Team Scoring Streak
Navy has put points on the scoreboard in each of its last 114 games, scoring in double figures in 103 of those contests. The Midshipmen have not been shut out in a game since dropping a 12-0 decision at Princeton on Oct. 21, 1989.

Game Decided by 14+ Points, Advantage Navy
Navy has won each of the last-28 games decided by 14 or more points, dating back to its 42-10 victory over Cornell on Oct. 14, 2001, in the Pride Bowl only 38 games ago.

Navy Volleyball Sweeps Bucknell

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy trio of Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.), Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) and Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) combined for 39 kills and a .367 attack percentage as the Midshipmen posted a three-game sweep of Bucknell Friday night in Macdonough Hall. The 30-27, 30-20, 30-28 victory for the Mids snaps a three-match losing skid and boosts Navy’s Patriot League record to 2-2, while the loss drops the Bison to the same record in league play.

“We are very happy to come away with the win,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “I don’t think we played as well as we are capable of, but we played hard and that effort gave us a number of opportunities we were able to take advantage of. We did what we had to do to win.”

The Bison scored six of the opening seven points of the opening game and held an 11-8 lead, but Navy used an 8-0 run to take a 16-11 advantage. The Mids slowly increased their lead until Navy was in front by the score of 29-22. After Bucknell closed to within two points at 29-27, a Bison attack error closed out the game.

An early 4-0 run in the second game gave the Mids a 10-6 advantage, a lead which they soon opened up to 18-10. Bucknell rallied and closed to within five points at 25-20, but four Navy kills and a Bison attack error allowed the Mids to take a two-games-to-one lead.

Bucknell held the lead through most of the third game, with its advantage reaching as many as five points (15-10). The Bison held a 22-20 lead when a kill by Sims pulled the Mids to within one point. Back-to-back attack errors by Bucknell quickly gave Navy a 23-22 lead. The two teams then traded points until Navy’s Lindi Conner (Sr., Kingman, Kan.) tallied a block to give the Mids a 28-26 lead. Bucknell’s Jenna Henderson recorded a kill to make the score 28-27, but Dougherty knocked down a kill of her own to take Navy to match point. Henderson proceeded to post another kill, but her ensuing serve went into the middle of the net to end the match.

Navy held a .280-.230 hitting percentage advantage and recorded eight service aces to just two for Bucknell.

Dougherty’s 16 kills paced the Navy offense, followed by 13 kills from Sims and 10 kills and a .600 attack percentage from Gibbs. Dougherty and setter Marissa Watson (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif.) both grabbed a Navy-best seven digs in the match.

Henderson’s 18 kills led Bucknell, while her 11 digs tied Jennifer Rupp for the most among the Bison.

The Mids return to Macdonough Hall Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. match against Colgate. The Raiders entered Friday night’s match at American tied for first place in the league with a 3-0 record.

“We’re playing another team ahead of us in the standings Saturday, so we need to maintain our effort of tonight and clean things up a bit in order to be successful,” said Schwob.

Mids Drop League Opener to Bucknell, 1-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore midfielder Molly Linhart’s shot in the ninth minute grazed the inside right post to give Bucknell (5-6-0 / 1-0 PL) a 1-0 victory over the Navy women’s soccer team (6-4-2 / 0-1 PL) in both squads’ Patriot League opener Friday night at Varsity Soccer Field in Lewisburg, Pa. The Mids, who have struggled to find wins on the road this fall, are 6-7-1 in Patriot League openers.

“It’s disappointing that we were unable to walk away with a win tonight because I felt like we played well,” said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "In particular it was one of our best attacking nights. We were able to generate shots and as a team, we played a complete 90-minute game.

“It was a hard fought game between two solid teams. I’m encouraged by how we’ve played the last few games, but now we need to work to put the pieces together.”

Both teams were able to generate their fair share of shots, as Navy booted 11 (6-5) and Bucknell took 13 (6-7) shots. The Mids, who got several looks from 15-20 yards out in the closing minutes of the contest, fired off all three of their shots on goal in the opening half. Meanwhile, Bucknell put two shots on goal in the first half, while Navy keeper Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) made four of her five saves over the second 45 minutes of play.

The Bison gained the early advantage when senior forward Krista Lee Gentile fed Linhart in behind the defender who was able to tuck her grounder just inside the right post at 8:45 in the contest. It was Linhart’s second goal of the 2007 campaign. Meanwhile, Bucknell’s defense was able to stave off Navy’s offensive arsenal and through 11 games, the Bison have given up just one goal in the first half.

Seven players accounted for Navy’s 11 shots, including reserve forward Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) who fired off three shots, while senior captain Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.) put one of her two shots on goal.

Navy, who met the Bison in its season opener for just the second time in 14 years, is now 1-5-1 in Patriot League openers played away from Annapolis. Meanwhile, Navy will need to solve its road woes in short order as three of its next four games are played on the road with all three contests coming against conference foes.

The Midshipmen return to action on Sunday when they return home to play host to NJIT at 5:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Friday, Oct. 5, 2007) – Thanks to three consecutive victories to open the new season, Navy’s ice hockey team jumped three spots to #20 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) poll of club ice hockey teams released today. The Midshipmen had been ranked #23 in the pre-season poll two weeks ago.

Penn State, a member of the newly formed Eastern State Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) along with Navy and four other teams, remained #1 in the ACHA poll. Navy’s opponent for a pair of league games this weekend, the University of Rhode Island (URI), moved from #4 to #3. Delaware, also a member of the ESCHL, dropped a notch from #7 to #8.

“You can already see this is going to be an outstanding league, with four of the six teams in the top 20,” observed Navy head coach Mike Fox. “There aren’t going to be any easy games in this league, that’s for sure. I’m proud of our team’s ranking, but now we have to live up to it this weekend against a very good Rhode Island team.”

The Mids face off against URI Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., and again Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., at the Brad Boss Arena. Both games will be carried live on the Internet, which will be available by clicking on the Teamline link, located in the bottom left corner of the Navy hockey web site (www.usna.edu/navyhockey). Josh Martinelli will handle the play-by-play duties, as always.

Last season, Navy dropped a pair of closely-contested regular season games to URI in Kingston, RI by scores of 4-1 and 5-2. In the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA) playoffs last February, the Mids fell again to the Rams, 6-1. Navy and Rhode Island left the ECHA after the 2006-07 season along with Drexel and Scranton, joining Penn State and Delaware in the new ESCHL.

Navy will carry an unblemished 3-0 record into tomorrow night’s ESCHL debut with URI, thanks to a 6-3 season-opening win over the University of Maryland on Sept. 21, followed by back-to-back victories last weekend over Lehigh, 4-0 and 6-1. Rhode Island, meantime, is off to a 2-0 start, having defeated the University of Buffalo, 6-2 and 10-1, last weekend.

The Midshipmen will be back home in Annapolis next weekend, hosting a pair of games in the McMullen Hockey Arena. Navy hosts Rutgers next Saturday (Oct. 13) at 7:30 p.m. and Towson University next Sunday (Oct. 14) at 1:05 p.m.

Mids Let Lead, Match Slip Away

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After winning the opening two games of its match against Colgate by a combined six points, the Navy volleyball team dropped the next two before going on to fall 15-13 in the fifth game, Saturday afternoon at Macdonough Hall. The 29-31, 27-30, 30-26, 30-23, 15-13 victory improves Colgate’s Patriot League record to 4-1, while Navy slipped to 2-3 in league matches with the loss.

“Game three was a big turning point,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “We had every opportunity to end the match right there, but we gave Colgate life by not doing what we had done in winning games one and two. We waited for points to come to us instead of going out and earning them as we did in winning the first two games. Our intensity level also slipped as the match went on.”

The decisive fifth game saw Colgate score the opening four points before Navy answered with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the game. The score was then tied at 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8 when the Raiders tallied back-to-back points to take a 10-8 lead. Navy responded with a run of three-straight points to take an 11-10 lead. The teams traded the next two points before Colgate took a 13-12 lead on a Navy service error and a Navy attack error. The Mids tied the game at 13-13 on a kill from Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.), but Colgate closed out the match with a pair of kills.

The two teams played to a near standstill statistically. Navy totaled 74 kills, a .249 hitting percentage, 66 digs and 10.0 blocks, while Colgate tallied 77 kills, a .238 attack percentage, 70 digs and 7.5 team blocks. Both teams recorded five service aces, while the Mids committed 12 service errors to 11 for the Raiders.

Individually, Dougherty’s 22 kills led all players in the match, with teammates Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) adding a season-high 20 kills and Jessie Sims (Jr., Etowah, N.C.) knocking down 17. Dougherty also paced the Navy defensive players with 15 digs, while Krista Eschelman (So., Germantown, Md.) contributed a career-best eight blocks.

Colgate was led offensively by Casey Ritt with 20 kills and defensively by Katrina Zawojski with 20 digs.

The two-hour, 25-minute match saw Colgate tally 131 points and Navy 123. The score was tied a total of 47 times on the afternoon.

Navy will next play Tuesday night at Hampton before returning home to face Patriot League foes Lehigh Friday night and Lafayette Saturday evening.
