Navy Offense Struggles in 3-0 Loss at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh scored three second-half goals and held the Navy offense to just four shots to hand Navy a 3-0 setback in men’s soccer action on Saturday night. The loss drops Navy’s record to 5-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Patriot League.

The first half was a defensive struggle on both sides, as Lehigh outshot the Mids, 4-1, and neither team recorded a corner kick in the opening 45 minutes.

The Mountain Hawks then got on the board just 5:25 into the second half, as Kyle Evans scored the first of his three goals on the evening, off a rebound shot by James Graf. Evans would tally goal number two on the evening in the 67th minute with an assist by Jim Taranto. Evans concluded the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 85th minute.

Navy was outshot, 15-4, on the evening, and drew one corner kick to Lehigh’s three. The Mountain Hawks were whistled for 12 fouls to Navy’s eight. Evan Barnes (Dublin, Ohio) stopped a career-best seven shots in the loss.

Navy will host Howard on Tuesday night, beginning at 7:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. For ticket information, call the Naval Academy Athletic Association ticket office at 1-800-US4-NAVY.

KINGSTON, RI (Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007) – Navy’s ice hockey team played well in its first game in a new league, but couldn’t overcome a three-goal third period deficit and fell to the University of Rhode Island, 5-3, Saturday night at the Brad Boss Arena.

With the loss, the Midshipmen dropped to 3-1 overall this season and 0-1 in the newly formed Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL), while Rhode Island’s Rams improved their win-loss record to 3-0 (1-0).

The two teams meet again tomorrow (Sunday) at 2 p.m., again at the Brad Boss Arena. Tomorrow’s game will not be broadcast over the Teamline network.

URI broke out on top early Saturday night with a Cory Pinheiro power play goal just 1:57 into the first period. Navy bounced back a short time later to even the score at 1-1 with an even strength tally from junior Jeff Martin at 5:19, the lone assist credited to classmate Nolan Anliker.

The Rams regained their one-goal margin midway through the opening period with a goal off the stick of Anthony Rowella at 10:05.

URI stretched its lead to 4-1 before the halfway mark of the second stanza, thanks to a power play tally from Devin Sheehan at 5:02 and an even strength goal by Cory Manley at 8:04.

The Midshipmen cut their deficit to 4-2 before the period ended on a beautiful shorthanded goal from senior Nick Schwob, assisted by Anliker, at 14:35.

The hometown Rams took a 5-2 lead early in the third period, thanks to a Ben Herring tally just 1:08 after the opening face-off. Navy’s Schwob recorded his second goal of the night a short time later, at 6:53, to pull the Blue-and-Gold within two, 5-3. Anliker and junior defenseman Matt Swezey assisted on Schwob’s second tally.

Unfortunately, the Mids were unable to score again over the game’s final 13 minutes and dropped their first game of the young season.

Navy netminder Sophomore Eric Anderson stopped 36 of the 41 URI shots he faced, while his counterpart in the Ram cage, Ray Martin, had 26 saves on 29 shots.

After facing URI tomorrow, the Midshipmen will be back home in Annapolis next weekend, hosting a pair of games in the new McMullen Hockey Arena. Navy hosts Rutgers next Saturday (Oct. 13) at 7:30 p.m. and Towson University next Sunday (Oct. 14) at 1:05 p.m.

Navy faces Cornell in a new role today
Sunday, October 07, 2007

A new coach and a brand new mission – it all adds up to a very different Navy team coming to Pride Bowl XXIX this afternoon at Kean University’s Alumni Football Field in Union.

For the first time in a long time it does not come to the game as the defending Eastern Collegiate Sprint Football League Champion. For a team that has won more league titles than any other, that’s incentive enough. Add to that the fact that Cornell, today’s opponent, is the team that lifted that title and you don’t need to be Knute Rockne to figure what first-year coach Jake Jenkins’ pregame pep talk will be all about.

For the first time in five years it won’t be Army against Navy (the Mids won all four of those games), but there will be no shortage of drama. Zak Dentes, the quarterback who engineered Cornell’s upset victory last year, returns as does his top receiver, Mike Brennan.

The game, co-sponsored by Essex County, is scheduled for a 2:05 kickoff. It will be preceded by a pregame march-in featuring 100 Midshipmen, the Wall High School Junior ROTC color guard, twin bag pipers and an added twist, emphasizing what this game is all about:

One hundred Project Pride elementary school students will escort the Mids into the stadium for their traditional lap around the track.

As an added attraction, the Malcolm X Shabazz High School marching band will perform for the seventh straight year at halftime. The game is the sole fundraiser of Project Pride which, with virtually no public funding, has awarded $1.7 million in scholarships to college bound Newark students and raised roughly $4 million for after-school programs that have run the gamut from conversational French for 9-year-olds, first and second graders cooking, computer science, instrumental literature and comprehensive reading.

But beyond all the pregame excitement, the spur that Project Pride hopes will lead to its second sellout in two years, remains the same.

It’s the football game.

Both teams are undefeated this year (each at 2-0) and Cornell has an eight-game winning streak dating back to the opener of last year’s championship season.

In Enrique Harris and Rich Engle (last year’s Pride Bowl MVP), Navy sports a pair of running backs that has amassed the best combined rushing yardage in the league. For Cornell, Dentes is throwing the ball with the same flair that led to the Big Red’s stunning upset of Navy last season, the one that not only led to the eventual title but also snapped Navy’s 15-game winning streak.

Among the Jerseyans returning home for this game are Cornell’s all-league linebacker John Parke (East Brunswick) and running back Matt Malleo (Wall) as well as Navy’s Engle (Medford) and backup quarterback Jon DeWitt (Mendham).

Navy Sweeps Titles at Occoquan Challenge

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Navy lightweight crew team opened its 2007 fall season by winning titles in both the championship eight and championship four races at the Occoquan Challenge, Sunday on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax, Va. This marks the third-straight year in which Navy has swept the two crowns at the event.

“It was a great day of racing to begin our fall season,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. “We put onto the water two very evenly matched boats in the championship eight race, and to have them place first and second is a great accomplishment. Also, to have three of the top-four boats in the championship eight race and three of the top-five crews in the championship four race shows the depth we have on the team.”

Navy’s top-two boats in the championship eight event finished both very close to each other and well in front of the rest of the 11-boat field. The crews recorded times of 14:50.50 and 14:51.35, respectively, to finish first and second in the race. Dartmouth’s top entry finished over five seconds in back of the Mids (14:56.73) to place third.

In the championship four race, the Mids saw their top entry finish with a time of 16:41.09 to outdistance second-place Georgetown by over five seconds (16:46.44).

“Today was a great tune-up for the remainder of our fall meets,” said Friedrich. “This really puts us on track for where we need to be for both having a successful season and continuing to gain speed.”

The Mids will continue their fall season Saturday when the program takes part in the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia.

Championship 8 Race (11 boats)

Navy Water Polo Impressive in Two Wins

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 13-ranked Navy water polo team pieced together perhaps its best performances of the year, capping the weekend off with an impressive sweep of No. 14-ranked Bucknell, 10-5, and No. 11-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.), 9-7, in overtime. The wins move Navy’s overall record to 13-5, including 2-0 in the CWPA Southern Division.

In the first game of the day against Bucknell, the Mids jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first half, withstood a mini-Bison rally to lead 9-5 after three quarters, and breezed to a 10-5 decision. The win was Navy’s 13th straight against the Bison, and improved the all-time series over Bucknell to 62-9.

Aaron Recko led Navy with five points (4 g, 1 a), while Mike Mulvey added four points (3 g, 1 a). Eric Gardiner contributed with three points (1 g, 2 a) and Andrew Bingham scored two points (1 g, 1 a). Four other players scored one point each. George Naughton was dominating in the net, recording a career-best 17 saves.

In the day’s second game, Recko and Mulvey scored overtime goals to lead Navy to a 9-7 decision over 11th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.). Recko scored three goals, while Mulvey added two goals and an assist. Bingham scored one goal and dished out two assists. Tyler Hill scored twice, and Kevin Bell tallied a goal with an assist. Naughton had another outstanding game, stopping 16 shots in goal.

Balanced Scoring Leads Navy Soccer to 3-0 Win Over NJIT

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Three different players scored goals for the Midshipmen, including sophomore Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio) who headed in the game-winner just three minutes into the game, as the Navy women’s soccer team claimed a 3-0 victory over NJIT (0-11) Sunday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids (7-4-2) kept their unblemished record at home intact, as they are now 5-0-1 in games played on their home field.

Navy dominated the game thanks in part to its fitness and its ability to keep possession on the offensive side of the field. Navy generated 31 shots, the second most this season, and put 16 on goal.

“I was pleased with our attacking game today,” said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. “We kept coming back at them and did a nice job of controlling the speed of play. It was also a great opportunity to get all of our players involved in the game.”

The Mids gained early control of the scoreboard when junior forward Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) took a corner from the near sideline and sent it high and to the right side of the box. Moeller, who scored six of her eight goals off corner kicks a year ago, made contact in the air, sending the ball to the left post for the game’s first goal at 3:07. Moeller is now the 13th different player to score a goal for the Midshipmen.

Navy tacked on a second goal when rookie Anastasia Abid (Williamsburg, Va.) knocked down NJIT keeper Sadie Mele’s goal kick just in front of the mid-line. Abid kicked the ball to team captain Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.), who one touched it to Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) who had only the keeper to beat.

The Mids earned their third goal of the game at 75:03 when junior forward Sam Schroth (Chester Springs, Pa.) was tackled from behind in the box. Sophomore defender Lauren Bresnahan (Weston, Fla.) sank the PK, the first of her collegiate career, to give Navy the 3-0 decision.

Navy sophomore goalkeeper Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the starting nod where she played nearly 77 minutes before senior Rachel Tarbox (Upper Arlington, Ohio) came in for the final 13 minutes in relief.

Mele was kept busy in the game, making six saves in the first half and seven in the second, including multiple point-blank shots by the Mids.

Navy will spend the next two weeks playing away from Annapolis as its next three Patriot League games will be played on the road. The Mids will travel to the Lehigh Valley next weekend where they face Lafayette on Friday night at 7:00 pm before concluding the weekend with a 1:00 battle against Lehigh.

Mids Turn in Second-Lowest Final Round, Tie for Fourth

STANTON, Del. - Anchored by junior Ryan Wielgus’ (Bethesda, Md.) second-round 2-under par 74, the Navy golf team turned in the second-lowest round of the day, a 14-over par 302, to finish tied for fourth at the Scotty Duncan Memorial Sunday afternoon at the White Clay Creek Country Club. Navy moved ahead of Penn, Drexel and Delaware, while James Madison made the move with the Mids to tie for fourth with a 37-over par 613.

“The course is a beautiful course to play, but it was very difficult out there today,” said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "It was pretty windy and they stretched the yardage to almost 7,000 today.

“Our guys felt like they left some strokes out there, but as we looked at the other scores, I think they realized that everyone struggled in the conditions.”

Iona and Cornell each produced a 24-over par 600 to claim the title after the two teams mirrored one another’s first (292) and second-round (308) scores. Bucknell finished 11 strokes behind the leaders with a 35-over par 611. Drexel junior Sean Semenetz was the only golfer to finish under par as he claimed medalist honors with a 1-under par 143.

The Midshipmen were paced by senior captain Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) who earned his first top-10 finish of the fall with a seventh-place mark of 5-over par 149. Renninger improved upon his 10th-place 2-over par 74 after the first place when he recorded a 3-over par 75 in the final round.

Wielgus, who produced Navy’s top score in the second round, finished just outside of the top 10 with his 7-over par 151. Wielgus sat in a tie for 26th following the first round with a 5-over par 77, but improved on the final day to finish among the top15 for the first time this season.

Senior Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) placed 21st with an 11-over par 155 (78-77), followed by Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) in 38th with a 51-over par 159 (81-78) and Chip Hardie (Crofton, Md.) was in 71st with a 24-over par 168.

Junior David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) and newcomer Josh Ziska (Camarillo, Calif.) also competed in the tournament for the Midshipmen as individuals. Miller tied for 38th with a 51-over par 159 (81-78), while Ziska placed 51st with a 54-over par 162 (80-82).

The Mids will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday when they compete in the Big 5 Classic at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Navy Tops Defending League Champion Cornell in Pride Bowl, 35-14

UNION, N.J. – Navy middle linebacker Tyler Hawkins (So./Canyon Country, Calif.) spearheaded the defensive effort with a career-best 17 tackles as the Midshipmen defeated defending CSFL champion Cornell, 35-14, in Pride Bowl XXIX at Kean Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Navy improved to 3-0 on the year, 1-0 in CSFL play and recorded its 300th victory in its 62-year program history (300-62-9). The Midshipmen also maintained their perfect record all-time (7-0) in Pride Bowl play. Cornell dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in league action.

“The win is rewarding, but only the first step in bringing the CSFL title back to Annapolis,” stated Navy head coach Maj. Jake Jenkins, USMC. "It was a big step, but we still have half of a season’s work left to do.

“As our middle linebacker, Tyler is really the motor that makes this defense tick. He made plays that he was supposed to make and some that weren’t expected of him.”

Navy’s defense, led by Hawkins’s Pride Bowl Most Valuable Player effort, held the Big Red off the board during the first-three quarters of play, limiting their offense to just 123 yards on 53 plays in that span.

The Midshipmen used big plays in the first half to forge a 14-0 lead going into halftime. Running back Richard Engel (Sr./Medford, N.J.) broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run with 1:22 left in the first quarter to put the Mids on the board at 7-0. In the middle of the second quarter, running back Nate Stewart (So./Fitzgerald, Ga.) sprinted for a 55-yard scoring scamper to make the score 14-0.

Navy put the game away in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns within the first-six minutes of the second half. The Mids took the opening kickoff of the half and marched the ball down the field on 10 plays, capped by quarterback D.J. Green’s (Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) one-yard sneak into the endzone.

Following a Cornell three-and-out, Navy needed only three plays to travel 80 yards to push its cushion to 28-0. Green pump-faked and found wide receiver Nash Bagby (Jr./Waco, Texas) on the left sideline open for a 59-yard touchdown strike.

The Mids wrapped up their scoring on the afternoon with 14:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, as running back Steve Benson (So./Ellenwood, Ga.) worked free around the left side of the line for a 22-yard touchdown run.

Navy’s offense out-gained Cornell, 470-239, despite running 10 fewer plays than its opposition. The Midshipmen held the Big Red, who entered the game averaging 201.5 yards per game, to just 105 yards on the ground.

Stewart led Navy’s 280-yard rushing attack with nine carries for 96 yards and a touchdown. Engel produced 67 yards on eight rushing attempts and a touchdown, while running back Enrique Harris (Jr./Crawfordville, Fla.) churned out 50 yards on eight rushes.

Through the air, Green was an efficient 12-for-22 with 185 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Green found wide receiver Todd Barriger (Sr./Prescott, Mich.) four times for 56 yards, while fellow wide receiver Tommy Tellson (Jr./Bedford, Texas) hauled in three passes for 25 yards.

In addition to Hawkins

KINGSTON, RI (Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007) – For the second time in less than 18 hours, Navy’s ice hockey team fell behind the University of Rhode Island in the third period by an insurmountable margin and could not recover, falling to the unbeaten Rams, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Brad Boss Arena.

With the loss, the Midshipmen saw their win-loss record drop to 3-2 overall, and 0-2 in the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL). The University of Rhode Island (URI), meanwhile, improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Rhode Island scored the only first period goal Sunday, an even strength tally from Stephen Gaffney at 4:36.

Navy evened the score early in the second stanza, thanks to a Jon Westerman even strength goal at the 1:30 mark, with senior Nick Schwob picking up the lone assist.

But the Rams then scored four consecutive, unanswered tallies to put the game out of reach, starting with a pair before the second period ended: Jaryd Coleman at 5:15 while URI was on a power play, and Ben Herring at 8:55 while the teams were at equal strength.

URI scored two more in the third period, the first a power play goal from Cory Pinheiro at 5:14 and the second a shorthanded tally from James Gaffney at 11:55.

The Mids closed the gap to 5-2 when Schwob scored his second shorthanded goal in as many games, at the 16:06 mark of the final stanza. Neither team scored again over the game’s final four minutes.

Navy sophomore goaltender Eric Anderson stopped 44 of the 49 URI shots he faced, while the Rams’ netminder, Andrew Lisi, recorded 43 saves on 45 Navy shots.

The Midshipmen will be back home in Annapolis next weekend, hosting a pair of non-league games in the new McMullen Hockey Arena. Navy hosts Rutgers this Saturday (Oct. 13) at 7:30 p.m., and Towson University next Sunday (Oct. 14) at 1:05 p.m.

Navy’s Dougherty Named as League Player of the Week

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy’s Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) was tabbed as the Patriot League’s Volleyball Player of the week Monday after leading the team in both kills and digs on the week.

Dougherty began her week by tallying 11 kills in Navy’s three-game loss at Loyola, then proceeded to total 16 kills in a sweep of Bucknell and 22 kills in a five-game setback to Colgate. The 16 kills tied her career high for the most in a three-game match, while the 22 kills was one shy of tying her career-best effort for the most kills in any length of match.

Additionally, Dougherty tied for the Navy lead in digs with seven against the Bison and recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-high 15 digs against the Raiders.

She averaged 4.45 kills and 2.36 digs per game and hit .282 over Navy’s three matches on the week, while she increased her averages to 4.75 kills and 2.75 digs per game and her attack percentage to .298 in Navy’s two league contests.

This is the first weekly award won by a Navy player this season and is the second of Dougherty’s career. She previously earned the accolade Nov. 14, 2005.

Navy will play Tuesday night at Hampton before returning to Annapolis and playing host to league foes Lehigh Friday night (7 p.m.) and Lafayette Saturday evening (5 p.m.).

Green and Hawkins Garner CSFL Weekly Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy sprint football quarterback D.J. Green(Jr./Indianapolis, Ind.) and linebacker Tyler Hawkins (So./Canyon Country, Calif.) have been recognized as the CSFL Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.

This marks the second time this season that Navy has earned the league’s weekly honors on offense and defense and the first for Green and Hawkins in their career.

Green engineered an offense that chalked up 35 points over the first-three quarters of play en route to a convincing 35-14 win over defending CSFL champion Cornell on Sunday at the Pride Bowl. Through the air, he connected on 12-of-22 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed for a touchdown on a one-yard sneak early in the third quarter.

For the year, Green is 26-of-42 passing for 410 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. His 162.71 passer rating ranks at the top among all CSFL quarterbacks this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Hawkins spearheaded a defensive effort that held Cornell off the board during the first-45 minutes of play. The Navy
linebacker totaled a career-best 17 tackles on the afternoon, 15 of which came during the first-three quarters. Eight of his 17 stops were of the solo variety, with 1.5 coming in the backfield for a loss of two yards.

Despite having missed the season opener at Frostburg State JV, Hawkins leads the team and ranks fourth in the league with 26 tackles this season.

The Midshipmen (3-0, 1-0 CSFL) return to action on Friday, Oct. 19, when they host Princeton (0-3, 0-1 CSFL) in their lone home contest of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission is free at Rip Miller Field.

Mids Post Sweep over Pirates

HAMPTON, Va. - A balanced offense with nine players recording at least one kill helped the Navy volleyball team post a three-game sweep over Hampton, Tuesday night in Hampton, Va. The Mids improved to 13-8 on the season with the 30-20, 30-21, 30-27 victory over the now 10-13 Pirates.

“We are very pleased with not just the win, but how we played,” said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. “Everyone played and everyone contributed to the victory. We received some very nice performances from people who have not seen much court time so far this year. Their receiving this confidence in themselves tonight will help us over the remainder of the season.”

Navy started the match strong by scoring five of the opening six points of the first game and held a comfortable advantage over the remainder of the game. In contrast, both games two and three were very close.

The second game was tied at 17-17 when the Mids went on a 5-1 run to separate themselves slightly from the Pirates. Navy soon held a 23-21 advantage when the Mids went on a game-closing 7-0 run. A kill by Rachel Dougherty (Sr., Derwood, Md.) returned the serve back to Navy, then Alexa Gibbs (Jr., Springfield, Ill.) dropped in a service ace to make the score 25-21. The remaining five points consisted of a Dougherty kill, a Hampton attack error, a Dougherty kill, a Hampton attack error and another Dougherty kill.

Navy tied several times to pull away from Hampton in game three, but never could manage to hold onto or expand slim leads. A 19-14 Navy lead closed to within one point at 21-20, then the Mids took a 26-21 advantage before the Pirates rallied to make the score 27-26. Abbie Merkl (So., Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Lindi Conner (Sr., Kingman, Kan.) teamed on a block to give Navy a two-point lead, but a Barbara Beal (So., Patchogue, N.Y.) attack error sliced the advantage back down to one point. Merkl recorded a kill to take Navy to match point, then Beal knocked down a kill of her own to end the contest.

Navy totaled just a .185 hitting percentage on the night, but hauled in 42 digs (to 31 for Hampton) to hold the Pirates to a .088 attack percentage.

Dougherty, who was tabbed as this week’s Patriot League Player of the Week, tallied 11 kills to lead the Mids. Aubrey Manes (So., Pratt, Kan.) recorded a career-high seven kills on the night, with Conner tying a career-best effort with six kills and Beal knocking down a career-high four kills.

Defensively for Navy, Aimee’ Burns hauled in 12 digs.

The victory was Navy’s 10th three-game sweep of the season, leaving Navy one shy of tying the school record for the most three-game wins in the program’s Division I history. Navy’s 1992 squad recorded a program-high 11 three-game sweeps, while the '99 and 2004 teams also tallied 10 sweeps during their respective campaigns.

The Mids will return to Patriot League action this weekend when Navy plays host to Lehigh Friday at 7 p.m. and Lafayette Saturday at 5 p.m. Both matches will be contested in Macdonough Hall.

“We want to end the first half of the league season with a strong effort this weekend,” said Schwob. “There are not that many matches left in the season, so we have to be ready to go each time out.”

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy junior water polo player Mike Mulvey has been named CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week for his role over the weekend, leading Navy to a trio of wins over nationally-ranked foes. The three wins moved Navy’s record to 13-5 overall and gave the Mids a 2-0 record in the CWPA Southern Division, heading into Wednesday night’s games against George Washington and Johns Hopkins.

Mulvey, a 6-2, 185-pound attacker from Carlsbad, Calif., was instrumental in the three wins. In a 13-8 win over No. 18-ranked Princeton on Saturday, Mulvey tallied five points (4 g, 1 a). On Sunday, he followed it up with four more points (3 g, 1 a) in a 10-5 win over No. 14-ranked Bucknell and then tallied three points (2 g, 1 a) in a 9-7 overtime win over St. Francis (N.Y.). Over his last six games, Mulvey has scored 24 points (18 g, 6 a), leading Navy to a 5-1 record during that span.

Mulvey currently leads Navy in points (60), goals (46) and assists (14) and has 170 career points (114 g, 56 a). He is on pace to become the first Navy player to score 100 points in a season since Sean Foster scored 107 points in 2000. His current pace of 3.53 points per game would give him 109 points if Navy were to reach the NCAA Tournament. In addition, his current goals per game average of 2.71 would give him 84 goals on the year, also the most since Foster’s 85 goals in 2000. He currently ranks 12th in the nation in goals scored.

Following Navy’s contests against George Washington and Johns Hopkins on
Wednesday, the Mids will be off until next weekend, when they host Bucknell,
George Washington, Princeton, Air Force and Johns Hopkins, beginning on Friday and running through Sunday.

Navy and Howard Battle to Scoreless Tie in Weather-Shortened Game

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s soccer team got the better of the offensive play, but couldn’t solve the Howard defense in a 0-0 tie on Tuesday night. The game, which was delayed 40 minutes at the start of the contest due to lightning, was called with 13:41 to play because of a second wave of lightning. The tie drops Navy’s record to 5-3-2 overall.

The Mids had outshot Howard, 15-11, when the game was called, with seven of the shots coming on goal. However, Howard keeper Victor Thomas stopped all seven shots to keep the Mids off the scoreboard. Most of Navy’s chances came from outside the box, as it was unable to convert any chances in close.

Meanwhile, Thomas Jenkins (Franklin, N.C.) continued to make the most of his chances. In his third start of the season, Jenkins made two saves, including a spectacular stop off a foul deep in Navy territory that kept Howard off the scoreboard. The shutout was Jenkins’ second of the season and fourth of his career. He currently owns a 0.35 GAA and a .917 save percentage in 256 minutes this year.

The Mids also drew five corner kicks to Howard’s zero and were whistled for 10 fouls to Howard’s 11.

Navy will resume Patriot League play on Saturday, Oct. 13, against American, beginning at 7:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
BALTIMORE, Md. and WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 11-ranked Navy water polo team won a pair of league games on Wednesday night, defeating 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 11-9, and George Washington in overtime, 9-8. The Mids won their fifth straight game and improved to 15-5 overall, and 4-0 in CWPA Southern Division play.

In the day’s first game in Baltimore against 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins, the Mids outscored the Bluejays, 6-3 in the second half to rally from a one-goal halftime deficit for an 11-9 victory. Navy jumped out to a 4-2 advantage after one period, but the Bluejays outscored Navy, 4-1 in the second quarter to take a one-goal lead at halftime. The Mids clamped down defensively, and scored the first three goals of the second half for an 8-6 cushion. After Johns Hopkins tied the game at 8-8, Mike Mulvey and Aaron Recko combined for three of the final four goals of the game for the victory.

Mulvey led the Mids with five goals, while Recko tallied three. Reed MacKenzie, Eric Gardiner and Chuck Baker scored once each.

After making the short bus ride south to Washington, D.C., the Mids escaped George Washington, 9-8, in overtime. Recko scored four goals with an assist, while Tyler Hill scored three points (1 g, 2 a). Bram Arnold scored twice and Kevin Bell dished out two assists. George Naughton made 11 saves in goal, while Steve Craney came off the bench to stop eight shots.

The Mids will be off until next weekend, when they host Bucknell, George Washington, Princeton, Air Force and Johns Hopkins, beginning on Friday and running through Sunday.

Navy Swimming and Diving Programs to Open Regular Seasons Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open their respective 2007-08 dual meet seasons Saturday when the squads play host to a four-team meet in Lejeune Hall. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m. and will feature Catholic, George Washington, Loyola (Md.) and the host Midshipmen.

Saturday’s meet begins a year in which the programs are attempting to become the first school in Patriot League history to win both league swimming and diving titles in back-to-back seasons. Last year’s league title won by the men’s squad was the fourth for the team in as many years, while the women’s team won its first crown in five seasons and its league-best ninth championship overall.

Navy’s men’s team posted a 12-4 record during the 2006-07 regular season, a year that included victories over each of the three programs the Mids will face Saturday. Navy tallied victories in both relay races and in 10 of the 14 individual events to defeat Loyola, last year’s host of the four-team meet, by the score of 184-99, Catholic by the count of 223-61 and George Washington by the tally of 207-83.

Of the seven athletes who won at least one individual event for Navy last season, only three return to the squad this season. Adam Meyer (So., Bethesda, Md.) won the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley events a year ago, while Billy Vey (Jr., Huntersville, N.C.) won the 100 fly and Andrew Hetzner (So., Riverside, Calif.) won the 200 fly.

“It is always an exciting time of the year when the NCAA season officially begins,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts. “I believe each team member is ready to race and dive this Saturday.”

Navy’s women’s team also compiled a 3-0 record during last year’s meet against the three schools the squad will compete against Saturday. The Mids posted a 207-55 win over the host Greyhounds, a 207-55 win over the Cardinals and a 185-83 victory against the Colonials. The triumphs sparked the Mids to a season-opening 10-meet winning streak and an 11-2 record for the entire 2006-07 regular season.

Navy athletes combined to win all but the 50 freestyle race during last year’s meet against the trio of programs, with the Mids returning all but two of the nine athletes who won at least one individual event. Returning multiple event winners for Navy include Thuy-Mi Dinh (So., Anaheim, Calif.) in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, Mallory Dietrich (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, Tara Chapmon (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 200 back and 500 free and Katie Griffin (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) on both diving boards.

Additionally, Erika Hubbard (Jr., Madison, Wis.) won the 1000 freestyle, Sarah Dorenkott (So., Hudson, Ohio) won the 200 free and Kelly Zahalka (Jr., ichmond, Va.) won the 200 fly during last season’s meet for Navy.

The Navy women’s team began its season last weekend by defeating four other programs to win the Potomac Relays Invitational for the second-straight year.

“We are very excited to race in our home pool again,” said Navy women’s swimming head coach John Morrison. “It has been a while. Coming off last weekend’s relay meet, our team will be focusing on individual competitiveness and working on the little things that make great racers. Catholic, George Washington and Loyola will come at us ready to win. We will need to compete well and with attention to detail in order to be competitive.”

Mids to Race Saturday in Navy Day Regatta

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy’s three rowing programs will each travel to Philadelphia to take part in Saturday’s annual Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The 2.5-mile course features the crews racing downstream in a head race format (boats racing individually as opposed to side-by-side).

Navy’s heavyweight team won the college eight and college four divisions and placed second in the college junior varsity eight race at last year’s Navy Day event. The Mids also won the college eight and college junior varsity eight titles at the 2005 regatta.

“We always look forward to this regatta,” said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. “We have won the varsity event the past few years, but the racing has been fairly close. Temple certainly has a very good record in this race with it being contested on their home water. The same holds true for Penn who I also expect will be very strong.”

Navy’s lightweight team, which won the open four and open eight races this past Sunday at the Occoquan Challenge, will join the heavyweight squad in defending their 2006 Navy Day Regatta title in the college eight race. The program also totaled a trio of titles at the 2005 event in the college eight, club eight and freshman eight flights.

After winning the college eight and college junior varsity races at the 2005 Navy Day Regatta, Navy’s women’s team saw its boats place second and third, respectively, at the '06 Navy Day event.

“With the strong field this race attracts, this is always a good opening test to see where we are at in our training,” said Navy women’s head coach Mike Hughes. “The entire fall season is a preparation for the spring season, so after this weekend we will have a better idea of what we need to do in order to become faster.”
