NC State College of Design 2024 Thread

Hey guys, check your portal cuz I just checked mine and I actually got accepted! Good luck, everyone!

Same here I got accepted to graphic design! Good luck everyone!

got an email saying my status had changed, had my boyfriend open up wolfpaw bc i was too nervous… i got in!! it’s unreal. i’m crossing my fingers for you guys.

I GOT INTO GRAPHIC DESIGN!

@oxfordcomma27 congrats!! take a big sigh of relief.

I got into architecture! For those of you applying for College of Design next year and scrolling through these forums:
The interview is not as intimidating as you would expect. For me, it was just a conversation with a professor and current student. The hardest question I got asked was what I would change about a specific portfolio piece. It sounds like in previous years there were two rounds of admission (one immediately without interview, one after interview). They might have stopped doing the first round because I have not heard of anyone getting an automatic admit this year. Our decisions came out around 5:30 today (2/18) via Wolfpaw portal. I hope this forum makes the process a little less stressful for future applicants!

Oh yeah, good idea. For graphic design, we set out our portfolios on a designated table and then waited for our interview slot. For me, the interview was with one faculty member and it literally went by in a flash! Lasted probably five minutes tops-- and I’m not exaggerating. She asked me why NCSU, why Graphic Design, some of my career goals, and any questions I had. Very different from what people said they experienced last year with the interview process-- just be ready to have all your answers and biggest brags in the front of your mind. I can think of at least three things I should have said, that I just didn’t think of because it went by so fast. Also, try to have an idea of your process, like how you create work from start to finish. And, lastly, always ask questions during the interview!!

Congrats everyone!!! I will be right there with you! Accepted into the Graphic Design program ?

Yay! I can’t wait to meet all of you this fall! My name is Aline, or I go by Allie. I’m super excited!

Congratulations ? My son was also notified last night that he was accepted into the Industrial Design program.

Hey! For those accepted into the graphic design program, I have a few questions. I want to apply this fall and I was wondering what works did you submit for the graphic design portfolio? Did you submit artworks with a variety of mediums and some digital art as well?

Also when you guys went in for the interview did you guys bring your actual artwork in or did you bring a portfolio book that included your artwork? Like if some of pieces are too big and is not in a drawing medium, could you bring a portfolio and some 18x24 artwork?

2020 Architect, what grades and test scores are competitive for architecture at NCSU?

So I submitted a combination of things… I was recommended by several people to focus more on variety than on showing any sort of graphic design proficiency. I submitted about 3 solid graphic design pieces, some illustrations, a sculpture, an embroidery project and a beer can design that i painted directly on to a used can. After I got the interview, I refined some of those things & took out the beer can and added some more illustration/graphic design combination works. most of my art is digital (but i do still draw everything by freehand) so i did submit some of that, as well as some ink work. for the interview, i also added a photography series i did. i had everything to scale, and that’s what i would definitely recommend-- i also matted all my printed 2D pieces. i wouldn’t recommend scaling everything down to fit in a folder, honestly. i saw plenty of people with larger pieces. i didn’t have anything as large as 18x24 in the portfolio, my biggest thing was 15x15 but i don’t think that size matters as long as you can fit it on the table and people can look at it! i think it’s more important for them to see the original work, in its full glory.

sorry that was a lot! i just totally understand the need to be prepared & in the know as possible-- i was the same way! feel free to ask any other questions, & let me know if you want to see what i submitted originally & what i brought to the interview.

I haven’t seen any statistics on what College of Design or major-based stats are for NC State. I think average NCSU stats will get you to be considered by the College of Design, and after that point your portfolio and design essays will hold the most weight.

Does anyone know how many spots were in Art and Design? I heard last year only 20-30 people got in.

Wow thanks so much @student0206! I’m planning to apply this fall of 2020. And if I were to include a wood sculpture or something piece of installation art that I put on a blazer, I could print a digital copy of it and include it into my portfolio or do I bring it to the interview. And would you say include more pieces that are creative than technical and would you say to include digital artwork since graphic design is more digital than hand drawn?

@jolinesailor if it’s something you can carry conveniently enough, i would
bring it. my sculpture was steel & plaster, so it wasn’t very lightweight but it was also not too big (like 5 inches in length & width & 10in in height) so i brought it instead of taking pictures. i would include the wood sculpture & the blazer bc that sounds cool & unique! i would try to show technical skill AND creativity, and try to include digital and traditional art. find a good balance. the ink piece i submitted was a drawing of a log cabin, so it was a lot of straight lines & just technical skill. one of my digital pieces was a drawing of a skull from life, and i just used the digital tools i had available to add some visual interest to the drawing after the actual drawing, but again it was very technical. & then some pieces i had were more just creative, like a drawing of a cat with yellow crocs on, & i would definitely have some pieces that illustrate that you can come up w original ideas. not everything has to be the pinnacle of technical drawing skill.

i forgot to mention this but i had a watercolor painting as well in my final portfolio.

thanks so much @student0206 !! did you get in to the graphic design program?
