Ncaa and Hawaii

Does anyone know how does Brigham Young University-Hawaii plays in Ncaa? They have to travel around 8 hours to go to other states of the United States, do they trave, play and travel back to Hawaii at the same day or do they spend some days on the states that they are going to play? Isn´t that routine expensive?

Thanks in advance

I can’t speak for that school specifically but typical college teams in any sport do not just hang out and stay when traveling because they have to get back for class. I know the Hawaii golf team is always tired because they have to travel to mainland and then have the time change to boot. Personally it would not be for me, as lovely as Hawaii is. Look at your sports schedule on the website and you will get an idea of the travel involved.

It is not only Hawaii where travel becomes an issue. My daughter is going to play lacrosse at a Florida school. One thing that is really nice is that most of the schools around here play about 15 games a year, and often 10-12 are at home because schools in the north can’t really host a lacrosse game in February, so they come here. If you look at the schedules for northern schools, you’ll often see the games are in blocks of 2-3 in Feb and early March, so they’ll come to Florida and play 3 different school on a long weekend. It’s great for the southern kids because they just play once that week and often don’t have to miss class at all.

Hawaii football has to make multiple trips to other teams in their conference each year (Mountain west), so is always traveling to Utah, Wyo, Colo. Each of those schools gets to play in Hawaii every other year. On the other hand, I bet most of their non-conference games are in Hawaii because everyone wants to go there!

Look up their schedule for the sport. In general, any boondocks programs (nice boondocks in Hawaii though!) will perhaps schedule a three-day weekend and play multiple matches or games (one per day) only occasionally.

For example:

They have a chunk of away games, then a chunk of home games. It looks like all the games are in Hawaii or California.

One of the East Coast D1 schools my son is looking at has a trip to the West Coast every other year, missing about three days of class in a row. Where I teach, we get letters at the beginning of the semester if the student athlete will miss specific days due to travel.

Travel and multiple consecutive days absent from classes can be an issue for almost all college athletes and many high school athletes. By using good strategies and planning the academic effects of team travel can be minimized.
