<p>I was hoping people could share what they think might be valid reasons for sending a child to a NE Prep School after 4 years of high school and before college.</p>
<p>Is the hope of getting into a better college a good enough reason?
To be more competitive at sports?
To allow for an additional year of maturity?
Other reasons?</p>
<p>If you can afford it and the child wants to go, I don’t think the reasons need to be that compelling. Any of the reasons you listed would be plenty good enough for me if those two preconditions were met. I don’t know of any circumstances where it would hurt the child or his/her long term options.</p>
<p>If the cost is a hardship, that’s a different story.</p>
<p>It can be a good transition for a student who might need to gain more maturity and have more supervision while living away from home than college will provide. It is not cheap, but it can be very worthwhile since many of the prep boarding schools offer a terrific environment with a lot of mentoring and top academics.</p>
<p>We did it for all 3 of those reasons.</p>

<p>It can be a really good thing if your student buys into the logic. Otherwise, he graduates from high school and goes off to a restrictive living environment while his buddies are enjoying new found freedom at college. </p>
<p>We did it for all of the reasons above – and it was a successful year. He also came away with a much better grounding in Calculus and a 5 on the AP. He’d had an A in Calculus in our <strong>Highly ranked</strong> public school and a 1 on the exam.</p>
