Necessary to major in bio field?

DS is a freshman and always had the impression that he should major in a biological field and loves the subject. He would like to go on to med school.

Now after meeting with the medical advisor, he was told to explore his options and it is not necessary to major in a biological field for entrance to med school. He just needs to be the best at whatever he majors in.

Is this accurate? Should I be concerned about the advice?

Yes, this is very accurate. Your son will perform better in college doing the major he loves best. Medical schools don’t really care what your degree is, so long as you demonstrate a scientific aptitude (the MCAT and science classes GPA) and a clear interest in medicine (volunteering etc).

If he loves biology, I see no problem majoring in it. He can obviously take courses in other subjects outside bio that he is also interested in.

Most pre-meds at D’s school have minors. D has 2 minors, one related, another one is not at all to her major (Zoology). However, there are kids in completely unrelated majors (Music, Latin, …others). D loves Biology classes, but she also absolutely enjoys her Music classes and Neuroscience classes. Also, Music is her way to relax.
