Necessary to sign up for MTAP?

I am a cc student who is trying to transfer to engineering school at UMD. By the time I transfer, I would have received my AS degree, and all the required gateway courses. Is it necessary for me to apply for Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP) if I am looking for direct admission to one of the LEP majors, since it “does not provide special consideration for admission to Limited Enrollment Programs.”

If anyone is familiar with MTAP, help will be appreciated.

MTAP won’t help with getting into the LEP’s such as engineering. That said, if you want to at least guarantee admissions to the the university it will give you peace of mind to that end.

I mean there is no point in going to UMCP if you don’t get into your choice of LEP…especially after you have AS degree and finished all the gateway courses…

Well that’s a personal choice. If you were interested in a non-lep major as a backup or if you felt you had extreme enough circumstances to merit an appeal then it might be worth attending. I know someone who didn’t get into engineering who went physics instead.

I did MTAP…it can’t hurt. It’s just a form you fill out. Do it.

I applied earlier this month, but I mainly did it so that I could use it to get out of AACC as soon as I could. Looking to transfer in the Spring.

I have 22 credits after last Summer and Fall (needed to take off for Spring for family issue), am taking 7 this Summer, and am unsure what I need to take for this coming Fall.

The big drawing point for me is the 30-credit, 3.0 GPA requirement for completion. I’m an older student (26), so I personally don’t care for going to school with most of the local High School.

Unless you’re getting a full ride, why not knock out all your Gen. Ed req’ments in CC? Seems like you are too quick on the trigger. Can you explain your reasoning? I am in a similar situation (MD C.C.-30 credits comp. looking to go into UMCP) But my thinking was if I had a bit more time to perfect my admiss. app, I might get a regent scholarship or a TAES–both full rides. Just curiious, comparing approaches…

P.s…-Money is a major issue for me, basically paying for college myself no help from family really. Maybe that is why I am a bit over cautious…

My main reasoning behind doing so is that I would be too far behind for my major, Physics. At the CC, the “General Physics” courses just transfer as the lower-level Physics courses, which would do me no good for my degree requirements. From what I was reading on Maryland’s site, there is something like 3 different Introductory Physics tracks, and the CC’s courses don’t transfer toward the upper track.

I hope that makes sense, lol. Since I would need to take 1 or 2 Physics courses/semester, I would be in a deep hole quick. My other possible major/minor (Math) isn’t as big of an issue, but still, the CC only offers so much (Calc I-III, DE, LA).

I’m not in the best financial state either, but the way I see it, for these majors I’d be spending the same amount of time at UMCP either way.

I see. Well that does make sense! Thanks for the reply my friend :)

Has anyone heard in regards to acceptance to MTAP. Its been about a month now, and have not heard any news yet. I emailed UMD and they said they would let me know within the next few weeks.

Planning on entering UMD FALL 2014!!!

I’m applying for the MTAP program and they asked the question “Why are you interested in participating for the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program?” As I’m new to this country I’m clueless about what they expect us to write and have no idea what should I write. So can anyone give some ideas about what they’re expecting us to write.
