I thought I would revive this thread since it’s getting close to move-in time! Anyone have any ideas about how to hang instruments (like a guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc.) on walls without using nails? Is it even possible?
My son’s walls were like concrete so he either cased them under his lofted bed or kept out one at a time on a guitar stand in the room.
My VP student kept her acoustic guitar in her guitar bag in her closet for safety. You never know what will happen in a dorm room.
@Shellg and @SnowyJoJo - both excellent suggestions/points. I haven’t seen the closet yet - we didn’t tour the rooms and they aren’t shown on the videos we’ve watched - so I’m not sure that that will be an option. So, I think we’ll just plan on utilizing the under-bed space.
This is a super helpful thread. Just wondering if there are any variations on advice for a voice student. Is an ipad still useful? Will the teachers tell the kids about what programs to put on it/use? We are very low tech here. DD will be getting a double degree in an academic subject and has a very old MacBook, and we are wondering if she needs a new computer too. That is a lot of money though!
In my opinion, certainly fine to have her start with what she has and decide after school starts if she feels an iPad is necessary and/or worth the investment.
Although my DS (not voice) uses his iPad quite a bit now while performing, there is always a way to use hard copy music and some students still prefer it. For theory and composition classes, she should be able to use her laptop.
Your daughter will likely be able to learn programs available and usefulness from other students as she embarks on her studies.
I’m always of the opinion that it is wise to hold off on spending money and let my kids weigh the needs and expenses.
My voice major uses his iPad exclusively, but I definitely see singers using music folders during performances. He was using the iPad already in high school to hold all his music and download repertoire and to do his school work, so it works as an ‘all in one’.
But, I agree with @anotheroboemom’s opinion that she could wait to see what she’s most comfortable with before spending money on it.
Our ds is a double bassist, so he’ll keep that in the bass room in the music building. But he’s also bringing two guitars with him (electric and acoustic). We’re not sure whether these will work, but we’re bringing each of these with us to see, and will return to Amazon if they don’t work in the room.

We figure the first one might work if there’s a hook on the wall somewhere, and the second might work over his closet door.
Those are great! Thanks for sharing!!!
My voice major son started out using a folder with printed music, but switched to an iPad when the pandemic made it hard to get access to a printer at school. He loves that iPad now. He uses the ForScore app (not free but worth it) for his music and has an Apple Pencil for marking up his music. An iPad can be heavy to hold through a long concert for a singer so consider weight when purchasing, or work on those back and shoulder muscles.
