Son just got an interview for a great job in New York. The interview is this Thursday. He is currently living in DC and usually stays with a friend if he goes up to NY, but that won’t work out this time. He could take the train up Thursday morning (it is an afternoon interview), but he is thinking he would rather stay overnight. Anyone have suggestions for a cheap hotel. Interview is on west 57th, so he’d like to be nearish.

The employer is not paying for his travel and hotel?

I would just check out travelocity or expedia.

Good luck with the interview.

I notice you say he could take the train up. If you’re talking from DC, there are some incredibly cheap busses that run to NY. I think one is called Bolt, but there are also others. I’ve never done it, but I know many “middle to upper middle class suburbanites” who have.

Since he’s one person, and booking kind of last minute, this is the kind of thing that I would use Priceline or Hotwire for. But even then, “cheap hotel room” in midtown Manhattan is this sort of thing is defined only in relative terms!

He normally does take the bus up (Bolt is the one), but he says it is crowded, hot and can be dirty. He doesn’t really want to show up for his interview all hot and dirty after riding on the bus all morning in his interview suit.

Would he feel comfortable calling the interviewer and asking for a hotel rec? If it’s a big company they might have relationships with local hotels where they can offer special rates. If not, being the last weeks of NYC tourist season and college move-in season, you’re looking at $250+ a night for sure.

I have never tried this, but this site got a lot of press… hoteltonight dot com.

He can try this site too: https://www.airbnb.com/search

Priceline Express (not the regular Priceline) will have cheap alternatives. The only downside, you won’t know name of the place until after you accept. You will know the vicinity, the amenities, star rating though. The prices are at least 40% discounted.

Or, he can sleep on someone’s couch… there is couchsurfing.com

We had a thread on this some time ago, and I recommended this hostel:

[New York Loft Hostel | The Hostel](http://www.nylofthostel.com/)

I looked at the link above for the Hostel and it is $140 for a twin with a private bath which is a good price. The Hostel is in Brooklyn so he would have to get from there over to W 57th for his interview.

Son recently stayed at the Larchmont Hotel,27 West 11th St. It is European style with shared bathrooms on each hallway but sinks in the rooms. Great location, friendly helpful staff and super clean! Amazing rates too. It is in Greenwich Village (212) 989 9333.
Seems to be $109 a night. Good luck!

How about The Jane?

If interview isn’t until the Afternoon, then why not stay outside of Manhattan?

The Jane is a hip hotel. The rooms are tiny, but it is close to a lot of subways. You could still get a room for 105.

Hotel Newton at 95th & Broadway on the Upper West Side is $170 for a standard single, private bath. Rooms are smallish but comfortable, great location with lots of NYC amenities, easy subway access to W. 57th, or if weather’s OK it’s a nice walk. Also easy subway access from Penn Station. Lots of Europeans stay here.

1) he could stay in New Jersey and take NJ transit on Thursday
2) bid on Priceline. We recently paid $120 for midtown Hilton

The Pod hotel on 51st is worth a look online.

I got a room at the Wellington a few weeks ago for $143 using a AAA discount but saw the same price on expedia. It’s at 55th St & 7 Ave.

Lots of great suggestions for hotel rooms but I wanted to advise against airbnb. Renting a room in an apt in NYC is illegal with only a few exceptions. Am not 100% sure of this but I believe it is OK to rent a room if tenant is also on premises and also rentals of more than 30 days may be permitted in some situations. I am hazy on the details but do know that the practice is illegal more often than not.

If Amtrak were still running, I would be as happy to travel home the same evening.
