<p>Should we admire heroes but not celebrities?
Each person has a different definition of celebrities and heroes; however, heroes are in a class of their own. The former almost always usurps the throne of justice with negative effects and therefore they do not deserve the admiration of society. Donte Sallworth, an NFL receiver, is a paradigm of the negative effects celebrities bring. Likewise, Michael Vicks dog fighting scandal proves that celebrities do not deserve our unfaltering attention. History and sports prove that celebrities are normal people that make mistakes, while heroes are people who learn from their mistakes.
Donte Stallworth, former Philadelphia Eagle and New England Patriot, was caught driving while intoxicated. Not only did Stallworth break a law, he committed a crime like no other- murder. Donte did not mean to kill the man but he still committed a crime. Furthermore, Donte was tried and charged with vehicular manslaughter and 30 days in jail. A sentence of only 30 days is not worthy of a mans life, and he deserves to be incarcerated to this day. Being a celebrity once again outweighed the system of checks and balances Montesquie coined which proves that celebrities do not deserve the admiration of society.
Michael Vick, current Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, was charged with running one of the largest dogfighting rings ever. When questioned about the scandal Vick simply stated, It was my brother, and I had nothing to do with it. Someone who lies and hurts animals barbarically certainly does not deserve the admiration of todays generation. Although Vick has apologized and made countless donations to charity his wrongdoings are scarred on the dogs involved forever.
Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan are poor paragons of human beings. She has been in rehab countless times, whether it be for an eating disorder or drug abuse. Lohan wasnt always this way, she was once a sweet and uncorrupted girl who played a pair of twins in The Switch. Giving celebrities the spotlight at a young age sets them up to meet their demise, an additional reason why they do not deserve the respect of society.
Admiration is a strong verb that means to respect and honor someone who has had a positive impact on the world, and celebrities from sports to the red carpet are not worthy of this honor. Heroes are people like Martin Luther King and Theodore Rosevelt who have the worthiest credentials for the admiration of society. Both King and Rosevelt had the most prestigious hardware, the Nobel Peace Prize for their positive impacts on the world. Heroes are forever, while celebrities come and go, proving that heroes are indeed worthy of admiration while celebrities are not.
