Need a new refrigerator: any recommendations, advice welcome

It looks as though we need a new refrigerator … soon. I can’t even remember the last time we even looked for one. This house came with the one we now have, the one that’s telling me that I need to look for its replacement.

I looked here for dishwasher advice and you guys really helped. Now to the refrigerator.

Thanks

Following the early demise of three different well-known brands, I bought a mid-priced Samsung fridge. It’s efficient, and I really like the freezer on the bottom. My only two complaints are (1) the paucity of space for tall bottles; and (2) spotty repair service. Three years in I had a minor part fail, and let’s just say the repair service was not customer-oriented. The repair quote was about what I paid for the fridge, so I chose to fix it myself. The fridge is about six years old at this point, and still works great.

We have a GEProfile side by side. It’s deeper than I like, but does have one feature that I really like: a shelf that is divided side to side and let’s the front half slide under the back half to leave a place for really tall bottles. We leave it back all the time. Scroll down to see the shelf I mean

Any brand but LG. my dad has the repairman out 6 or 7 times in a little over 2 years with all kinds of issues.

I’ve liked our side-by-side models. (We have a large, wide space. I would not like the narrower ones with very slender freezer.)

Many do like the convenience and newer look of french door models … double-door fridge on top and freezer drawer(s) below. I was tempted when we bought a new fridge a few years ago. Although the fridge had wonderful visibility, I just felt the freezer storage was too limited. I make very good use of the freezer door shelves on my side-by-side. This thread had related discussions - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1245936-french-door-fridge-should-i-get-one.html?highlight=refrigerator

Key question (especially if you’ll still be feeding kids) - where/how will it store the frozen pizzas?

Top freezer models are usually the lower priced models, though they may be less convenient than bottom freezer and side by side models if you use the refrigerator most often. Side by side models are usually the higher end models.

We have a horrible GE Monogram, I know several other people with the same one and the ice maker is poorly engineered such that dispensing causes the ice to be force UP to the dispenser. It is very expensive to repair and due to the engineering will simply break again. Inspect the ice maker to ensure it follows gravity’s rules ;)

We’ve been very happy with our SS Maytag fridge with French doors on top, and a pull out freezer drawer on bottom.

Thanks for the replies. Please keep them coming. I’m taking notes and plan to look at refrigerators next weekend … unless forced to do so sooner.

dragonmom: Our current refrigerator has that divided shelf. We too just leave it back for tall items. Good reminder that I’d really miss that in a new fridge.

We have a GE Monogram. The ice maker works - if you count just dumping ice on the shelf below it working. The ice maker and its dispenser in the door haven’t gotten along in years now. The first repair (expensive) didn’t last and after that we were told by repairmen not to bother.

I have a new Liebherr and I love it, but its big. I have also always been a huge fan of Sears products and their service…

We bought a Kitchenaid counterdepth with french doors. I love the french doors --you can open both for full access to the interior and the doors are stubby so they don’t block the doorway then they are open.

We are major users of refrigerator magnets, and I was told none of the new refrigerators had magnetic doors, but this one does. It also has an inside water dispenser instead of one on the door, which I like.

We have a Sub-zero, and for what that thing costs, it should work perfectly for decades.

Sadly not the case. Expensive as heck to repair. The warranty is not all that great either.

The other fridge in the basement is over 20 years old and has never needed a repair. I don’t remember the brand, but it doesn’t really matter because they don’t make them like they used to any more. :D

We have a nice maytag sidebyside, its an older one though.

Funny, I LOVE my SubZero, now 16 years old and as good as new. I like having a bottom freezer, which is why I bought it, and I am glad not to hit my head anymore while looking in the back of the refrigerator section. I am a big soup-spaghetti sauce-maker, so we got a small freezer for the basement for when I’m in one of my frenzies. The bottom freezer is great, but not all that large.

I have an electrolux french door refrigerator, I love it. I was reluctant to have a freezer on the bottom but it is great. I also have counter depth. to me worth the extra money.

We had a GE profile and it only lasted 8 years.

Keeping an eye on this as DS is buying his first house and needs a refrigerator. All of the rest of the appliances are brand new but no fridge. We told him we would buy that for him as a “housewarming” present :D.

we also did the zero percent financing and that helped.

Mine is a side-by-side, maybe those are less reliable. It’s now 11 years old and has needed three major repairs.

I do like it though.

Our last side-by-side functioned well almost 17 years. (The water dispenser broke years before that. And there were door shelf problems - newer designs seem better. But it ran fine.)

I think I have the same one as qialah and couldn’t be happier.
Replaced a side by side with the french door model so I can fit trays, sheet cakes, etc.
Love the bottom freezer, and this model’s large freezer compartment has a removable divider so a large turkey can fit.
