Does anyone have experience with a short term certificate program to change careers? I have a BS and my most of my work experience is as a TA in the public school system while my kid was in school. I am currently working as a substitute teacher. I am tired of working with children. I am weary of applying for jobs. I need a reboot.
Is your BS in education or something else? What are your interests?
I went back to school in 2012, BS is in Public Health.
If you like the health aspect (but don’t want to look for something in public health/research) I would check your local community college for health career options - different health tech jobs have shorter programs. Guess it also depends what your income needs are.
Have you thought about getting an MPH? If you already have a history in ed & public health, you might consider going into something like health ed.
Or do you want to divert entirely?
What makes you think a different job would relieve you of working with “children.” Be careful what you wish for.
Start looking at areas that may interest you. Then figure out how to segue into that new career.
Thanks for the comments
You need to assess:
- your transferable skills
- your likes and dislikes (we know you don't want to work with children children so presumably you would be ok working with adult children and such)
- availability of training programs and how likely such training will result in meaningful job placement
- job markets in the fields where you want to dip in.
For example, let’s say, you love to write, you are a master of every grammar rule and can whip up a War and Peace in a weekend, and there is a journalism certificate program offered (cheap!) at a local CC, but it does not mean you need to rush into journalism if the job prospects are abysmal.
@BunsenBurner you have hit on my problem. PH is an interest and I enjoyed getting my degree but there are few jobs in my area. I graduated 3 years ago. I need to get training that will result in meaningful job placement.
Nonprofits, healthcare systems, peripheral verticals would all be targets. Look at various positions that require few years of experience to get an idea of what might interest you and then you can narrow your search. A teacher type might be good at managing volunteers or events or in communications…in my opinion.
You might want to look into something like becoming a radiology tech.
Not a bad idea… I had several MRIs taken just in the past few years. Non-invasive imaging is becoming a more routine tool… The last MRI tech was a woman in her 60s. We joked about middle age issues. The downside is that you will have to deal with humans… and some scaredy cat humans.
What about becoming a legal secretary? The good ones are worth their weight in gold. My boss keeps telling our assistant that she will regret the day of her retirement… she just keeps laughing, but frankly I dunno what would happen to us when she retires… she is so good. Has excellent proofreading skills and attention to details and is always friendly. The pay - at least here - is $50k and up to start.
