Need Access: parent's contribution since freshman year

We have never figured this out even though we have done Need Access many times in the past.

There is a question on the Need Access asking how much the parents have contributed to the child’s education since the freshman year of college.

Why do they ask this question? If they see a large number here, will they think “Great, this is a good milk cow. Let’s get more money from the parents!”. Or, they will take a pity on the parents: “The parents may have contributed more of their “fair share”. Give them some break.”

Is this number larger, the “better”? Or, the smaller, the “better”?

Interesting…where do you see it? D. applies to FA every year only to decline it later. She never mentioned that. Do you also file FASFA? We do. I am not sure where is a difference.

FAFSA, yes.

Could not recall where it (accumulated contribution from parents since freshman year) is on “Need Access” (I did not do it myself. I just heard about it.)

Thanks!
