I currently go to a small, private school. I am finishing up my freshman year this week. I absolutely loved it here, as i stayed in the dorms. However, I may have to commute next year due to cost. If i stay on campus all 4 years it will cost about 60,000, which is alot. I really wanted to live on campus and join a fraternity and get involved sophmore year since i focused on my grades freshman year. I just feel like as a commuter, I would be missing out on great experiences and would not have a social life, wouldnt be able to party, or join a fraternity. I live 30 minutes away from the school. I havnt decided whether to live at home or on campus next year yet, any advice?

No matter what people tell you, it’s going to be near impossible to keep up your social life while commuting. I have some friends who started commuting during the year and yeah, they come sometimes on weekends to party and crash on a futon, but it’s just not the same. They don’t really feel as part of the community as the rest of us. If I were you, I’d exhaust every option before deciding to commute.

Since its after your first year, you’ve probably made many new close friends, so its better than commuting for your frist year

Social opportunities are not worth 60k. Just try to take part in certain activities and if you take later classes then just do as much as you can before heading home.
