I am currently a Sophomore in HS. I screwed around a lot my Freshmen year and ended up with a 2.62 GPA (un-weighted.) I am really interested in pursuing a career in some sort of Engineering field (most likely Mechanical,) but I feel as though I royally screwed up last year and that maybe I won’t be able to get into U-Lowell, or any of the MA state-schools. Advise please!!!

Have you spoken with your guidance counselor or any of your math and science teachers about your goals? Start with that. They will have useful ideas about things you can do to improve your grades, and to make yourself into a better college applicant.

With that GPA, any UMass will take you, trust me. Think about Suffolk and Wheelock, too. Just keep working hard, and if you raise your GPA and get good SAT/ACT scores, you could shoot even higher, like BU or Northeastern.

Ummmmmmmmm, UMass-Amherst will NOT take you with a 2.62, esp. in engineering. This isn’t the UMass-Amherst of 20 years ago. You pretty much need to get at least all B’s to get into UMass-Amherst nowadays. Lots of in state kids are getting rejected. I know, S’s friends who had C’s didn’t get in.

Upward trends are important. Colleges realize that students grow-that’s why some throw out freshman year all together. Talk to your GC and see if you can retake a couple courses
