Need Allentown/Philly SEPTA help

D2 will be driving me from Allentown to the Doylestown station (R5) tomorrow to catch the train. I’ve used the ‘plan my trip’ feature of the SEPTA site and know when I need to leave Doylestown to be at the airport by a certain time. Unfortunately, this will be during the evening traffic rush, otherwise, I’d have her take me to Norristown, but I really don’t want her driving back to Allentown on 476 around that time (even though I could leave a bit later, and have less travel time on the train, and not spend so much time waiting at the airport).

What is the best way to get to Doylestown from Allentown, and how long should we give the trip?

Teriwtt, I would give it about an hour and 15 minutes from the 'berg. I can do it in about 40 minutes and I’m about 15 minutes from her, but you probably want to add a few minutes, so 1 hr. 15 minutes should do it.

If you come down 476 and get off at Quakertown, you can pick up 663 and then pick up 313 down to Old Easton Rd which will take you into the center of Doylestown. That may be the best way to go. I would give yourself an hour. Or take 309 down to 313. The problem will be if you are fighting rush hour traffic on either 309 or 313

I’m not so much worried about the trip down there, as I’ll likely be driving. But she will be driving herself back, and although she’s driven interstate before, 476 is one of the scariest interstates I’ve ever been on (and I’ve been on a lot), and I would prefer she avoid it at all costs. I’m assuming 309 has to be better than 476.

309 may be more to your liking then. Even though it is 2 lanes in each direction, the speed limit is lower and there are fewer 18 wheelers. Also, after a while 309 becomes more of a local road with numerous traffic lights as you go from town to town. It will take longer though, so give yourself additional time.

Terriwtt - Do you mean 476, the turnpike or do you mean 476 south of 276, where it’s not a toll road? Because I breathe a sigh of relief when I’m coming back from the Philadelphia area and get onto 476, the turnpike. It’s so much less crowded then the Philadelphia area roads.

DO NOT take 309 between Quakertown and Allentown. They are doing major road construction right in Coopersburg (my town) and the roads are single lanes each way. There is an alternate route parallel to 309 through town - Old Bethlehem Pike. I take the back roads to Doylestown as a matter of course and avoid both 309 and 476. If you do a google map search you’ll see the roads that MichaelNKat suggests. These are great roads and not a lot of stop lights once you get east of Quakertown.

change in plans… H will drop me off at Doylestown on his way to Princeton for business. He just didn’t want to drive me all the way to Philly airport, then go to Princeton. So I don’t feel so bad about a short jaunt on 476. I was rear-ended on 476 two years ago, and it seems everytime I drive between the Philly airport and Allentown I always pass at least one bad accident. I don’t like the no shoulders and 65 mph.

Is there any stretch of 309 that hasn’t been screwed up with construction over the last 5 years  ! I wasn’t aware of the portion you are talking about kathiep. Normally I would use 476 from Allentown down to Quakertown if I were going to Doylestown.

that construction is awful kath. i always take old beth from coops to 663 and hop on the turn pike over there - to skip qtown. I did it with my bf one day and he was like I NEVER KNEW THIS ROAD WAS HERE!!
