Need aware transfer trouble

I’m applying to a few schools (Brown, Cornell, NYU, Johns Hopkins) and they are all need aware. My family doesn’t have much and I am an independent student, so this is really going to count against me when they consider whether to let me in or not. If I don’t apply for financial aid through these schools how much can I count on from the government? What other sources are there for funds? Any recommendations on what to do?

Are Brown and Cornell “need aware”? I thought they were need blind.

As for NYU…I wouldn’t expect much from them. They might accept you, but they probably won’t give you the aid that you need. NYU is notoriously bad with aid.

I know that B is need aware for transfers, but I’m not seeing anything on the other websites that say that they are:

[NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Applying for Admission > Transfer Applicants > The Transfer Admission Process](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

[Hopkins Undergraduate Admissions :: Apply :: Applying to Hopkins](http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/apply.html)

[Cornell University Undergraduate Admissions Office - HOW TO APPLY](http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/transfer/index.cfm)

Are you sure they are? Not doubting you, I just hadn’t heard that over on the Transfer Students forum. If you have some links to this information I’d be grateful as I try to stay up to date about transfer issues.

m2ck,
Yes B is need aware for transfers:

https://financialaid.brown.edu/Cmx_Content.aspx?cpId=56</a></p>

I concur, even if NYU isn’t need aware, they offer lousy FA.

Ahh…good to know.

Have you run your numbers through a calculator? I dont think you can count on much from the government aside from the Pell Grant (if your EFC is low) and Stafford Loans. That’s only about $11,000 in total.

I think you should def apply for FA. there’s no use getting in if you can’t go or have to take on a mountainload of debt from private lenders to go.

I can answer for NYU…their full cost of attendance is about $58,000 year. Their top scholarships are merit based, at $25,000. The have a FEW very competitive scholarships that are “full tuition” (very low income, first generation, AnBryce…for example). But that still leaves about $4000 in “board” and $9,000-$15,000 housing.

So it turns out Cornell is need blind, as well as NYU. JH and Brown are NOT though.

Can you supply the link for JHU? Many thanks!
