I have finally decided to join the ebook revolution. Based on the positive experiences discussed on this forum I have decided to get a Kindle. My question now is are there any benefits to the added 3G feature if I am generally in places where wireless is available. I know that the 3G allows you to download books anywhere. Is there anything else I’m missing? Thanks

If you do get the 3G, there will be no monthly fee for access. So the only difference in cost is the initial $50 extra for the 3G version. Spread over the life of the Kindle (3-5 years or more??), that not much for the added convenience.

I have the second generation Kindle (that is 3G only). Besides the convenience of downloading books from wherever, it’s kind of nice to have at least one piece of technology that connects without an initial setup --no need to enter WEP codes, etc.

I have the 2nd generation Kindle with 3G, my mom has a 3rd generation wireless only. I hardly ever have my wireless on to save battery power but I like having the 3G option. I would probably pay the extra $50 to have the 3G.

By the way I love the look of the new Kindle. Of course I have no reason to get a new one . I bought mine after last Christmas (present to myself) and I think I paid $260 for it

I opted for the 3G (actually, husband did–it was my birthday gift). I am glad I have it. I agree with both mrsref and ready2010. I don’t need the 3G at home, but it’s been great when I’m traveling.

I love the 3G feature on my Kindle. When someone recommends a book to me, I can instantly download a sample rather than having to remember to do it when I in a wi-fi area. I can also download next month’s book at my book club meeting instead of having to write it down. I also subscribe to several publications that are downloaded automatically. I do keep the wireless off most of the time to conserve the battery but turning it on to download is very quick.

I have the wifi version because H has the 3G version so we’re covered; having said that I am usually never anywhere without wifi and always have several books downloaded at one time in any case…to cover situations where I might need a book and for some reason there is no wifi.

My Kindle is a 2nd gen from last Christmas, paid about $249.
It has the 3G and I’m glad it does…and it wasn’t an option to get wifi only so saved me the deliberation.
Love that I can be anywhere, someone mentions a book, or I see an ad and I just download the book or sample.
Not sure but think I’d still opt for the $50more 3G 3 gen.
Or maybe wait till next year? for the $99 4th gen sure to come??? :)

I’ve got the 3G and am glad that I do – keep in mind that the Kindle also has a web browser in it, so it can be used to check or visit sites on the internet (but only in monochrome). I got the kindle specifically so that I would have something easy to carry with me when I’m not home, so the whole point is that I might want to use it when wireless is not available. I think for $50 more it just makes sense to have it.
