Need help choosing target/safety schools!

I have a 3.8 unweighted gpa and 4.47 weighted. 34 on the ACT, 780 and 770 on Biology and Math 2 Subject Tests. So far my top choices are University of Maryland College Park (in state), University of Virginia, and University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. I might also apply to Duke and an Ivy but need some help picking safety and target schools! I’m planning on majoring in engineering and potentially focusing on biomed.

Does UNC have engineering? I know NC State does, but…

Are you looking for a safety with finances or acceptances?

Are you looking for merit aid and/or need based aid?

A couple of thoughts that come to mind for Biomed Engineering AND decent opportunities with your scores for merit + (potentially) need based aid would be Case Western and U Rochester.

If you don’t think UMCP is safe enough, have you considered UMBC?

Among selective OOS public universities, Michigan seems to be a stronger engineering school than UVa or UNC-CH. If you believe the US News engineering rankings, UMCP also is a stronger engineering school than UVa or UNC-CH. Anyway, UMCP would be cheaper for you as a Maryland resident than most OOS public flagships.

So, let’s say UMBC is a safety, UMCP is a low match, and Michigan a high match. Then consider adding Duke, JHU, WUSTL, or UPenn as reaches (if your family can afford its Expected Family Contribution for these expensive schools). Case Western is a not-too-selective private school you might also want to consider (as a low match), although it might not be a better choice for you than UMCP.

UMich would be full pay OOS. UVA and UNC-CH meet need, even for OOS admits. I agree that UMCP would be a better engineering choice than UVA or UNC. I have trouble believing UMCP is not really a safety. They have a 45% select rate; GPA, rigor and scores are ranked very important; a 34 ACT translates into a 1510 SAT compared to a 1400 at 75%ile from the CDS.

With those stats it seems like you have your targets. It may be reaches that you need. I would definitely add Duke and an Ivy (I don’t know much about engineering and I know many of them don’t have it, so I can’t say which one…Cornell?)

You could probably get a full ride at University of Cincinnati and they have an excellent engineering school. I would also suggest Case Western - and if you want to go only engineering and small - Rose Hulman.
