Need Help Cith Classes

Here is my current schedule next year: Freshman Status

Major: Economics through CAS

Business Leadership (Drop) 1 credit hour
Intro to Sociology 3
Writing Rhetoric 3
Business Computer Applications 1
Calc 3
Intro Library Research 1

I talked to the business dean, and he felt Biz leadership wouldn’t really be worth it for me since it discusses what classes to take and how to plan for business majors and not for CAS majors like me. My school does not allow freshmans to take Econ courses. I took a look at the political science and history coures, but the ones that looked interesting were all filled up. Can’t take another sociology class either. I’m considering a 1 credit hour Tae Kwon Do class since it’s something I believe I can do well it, and not stress over too much. I know my schedule doesn’t look to bad, only 12 hours, but last thing I want to do is make a fall my first semester… high school taught me that. So should I take the Karate class? Or is there a better route to go?

So I’m considering Astronomy 103 since I need 10credit hours of science to graduate. My problem is that the teachers offering the course aren’t rated too high based on student reviews. Should I consider another course because of the professor’s low rating?

if you are looking at myprofessor.com to rate professors, i would take those ratings with a grain of salt. typically students only rate teachers if they really loved or hated them. Read the comments and if they are objective, like he is very disorganized, in accessible, etc, then i would consider taking a different professor. If its like, he was mean to me, take that with a grain of salt. If there is a class you think you will really love then take it. and sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and take a not so great professor to fulfill credit hour requirements

Karate and Taekwondo are two different disciplines of martial arts. And neither art is easy. I don’t know how long your class would be, but the general time for Karate (depending, too, on the style) is between 2 hours and 5 hours. Beginners generally run at 2 hours.

In Taekwondo (I studied Songahm style), it wasn’t unusual for my classes to run from 2 in the afternoon to 10 at night.

You also need to keep in mind that both these disciplines are physical. This is not yoga or Tai Chi. You will sweat, and gasp for air, and your lungs will hurt, and most of your class will conist of performing the same basic self-defense techniques over and over. And over. This is called “body memory” and this is how you’re trained.

Martial arts can be a LOT of fun, but don’t go in there with the mindset that you’ll be engaging in randori on your very first class. My guess is that your first semester will consist of basic kata, basic blocks, and maybe one or two sparring sessions on the mat.

The guys you see on TV in tournaments are men (and women) who have been studying for years and years. And yes, they look amazingly cool doing their helicopter kicks and chopping blocks of wood, but it took years of discipline, blood, sweat, pain, and tears.

Just keep that in mind, and by all means, have fun with it if you decide to take the class.
