I am currently a freshmen at Case, class of '12, and want to get some input on a list of schools to transfer to.
HS: 2040 SAT
3.7ish GPA in hs, several APs, 3 AP credits
varsity soccer, student government for 1 year, NHS, some volunteering
College: In 3-4 clubs, joining mock trial and debate when soccer ends
varsity soccer
Poli sci major, considering double major
Expecting between 3.5-3.75, have no real idea because my SAGES class grade has a writing portfolio due in the spring.

What want:
Within 6 hours of Pittsburgh(I don’t fly)
4,000-10,000 ppl (willing to compromise)
Not large state schools, not a super politically liberal school
Good FA (can afford abour $20,000/yr, hopefully less)
Solid social science department
Professors encourage discussions and student participation
Professors can effectively communicate in English
No forced diversity, the most qualified are accepted
Safe area, things to do off campus (can access city, something like Swarthmore’s location)

Want to limit list to 6 or 7, I have maybe about $300 for applications
My list:
Richmond, Tulane, Rochester, WashU, Georgetown(big reach), Cornell(big reach)
not a great list, I know

Bryn Mawr may be good. Smith. Flagler (in Florida, though). Georgetown and Cornell seem to be extreme reaches. What about Carnegie Mellon? Not that Carnegie Mellon is easy to get into, but it is easier than Georgetown and Cornell. Your requirements are kind of odd and some of your choices are not 6 hours from Pittsburgh. Case is a good school- what is it that you don’t like about it? If money matters a lot, why not look at your best state schools and compromise on the rest of the requirements? Flagler is very cheap for a private school, so I put it out there.

I don’t want any additional schools over 6hrs, those are the only ones over 6 hrs I would consider. I would apply to either Georgetown(dad works in DC several times a year, not the safest place but better than East Cleveland) or Cornell, not both, I actually chose Case over Tulane(my grandparents live an 1.5/2 hr drive away so I have family near by) and am regretting it now.
Case’s social department is very mediocre, a lot of crime on/around campus, 3/5 profs very very heavy accents, too much red tape, dorms/food horrible, the campus, very few class discussions(even though small class size), my classes amount to restating what was in the reading, many anti social ppl/not a ton to do on campus on the weeknights, campus is very spread out(many social events on southside, a 1.5 mile from freshman dorms), issues that I basically did not expect to have. It also feels very small as well(4,000 ppl).
I did not like Pitt(size, hard to get dorms, huge classes, huge campus, impersonal, many athletic facilities off campus) or PSU(middle of nowhere, too big, very strict UA policies, huge classes).

It seems that you have thought it through. Case seems more on the science/technical side. Tulane does sound like a much better fit for you. Goucher, north of Baltimore may be good.
