How much are you expected to pay? There’s the rub. Run a few NPCs to get your EFC range. Maybe you’re expected to pay full-freight. In that case, you’d want schools where you have a shot at significant merit aid. If your EFC is $30K, you’re in good shape.

@Dunboyne my budget is 40k anything under that I am ok with

Yes, but the amount of financial aid you’ll possibly receive greatly affects what schools you can apply to. How much your willing to pay doesn’t mean anything without knowing how much you’re expected to pay.

It’s two different things. You have what you can pay ($40K). Then you have what the school expects you to pay (Expected Family Contribution or EFC). If a school expects you to pay $60K, you can see how you’d be in trouble. You need to establish what the typical EFC range is for your family’s financial situation.

Are you full-pay? Do you qualify for need-based aid? Figure that stuff out.

In other words, are you planning to drive the cost under $40K per year with FA, or merit aid?

Makes a huge difference on where you need to be looking…

Since you are a California resident, consider the UC’s and Cal Poly SLO. Full pay price tag under $40K/year.

Yes, all UCs and CSUs should be under $40,000 per year at in-state list price (less if you get financial aid). Plenty of them are good for CS, and your stats indicate a good chance at most of them.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1678964-links-to-popular-threads-on-scholarships-and-lower-cost-colleges.html lists many other schools with potentially low costs to look at.

Do you mean $40k per year? If so, sounds like the family income is too high to qualify for any aid.

Or do you mean $40k total ($10k per year)?

If you mean $40k per year, then any of your instate UCs or CSUs, or Cal Polys would work for you. Apply to all of them.

You have schools on your list that won’t be affordable. Many are OOS publics and will expect you to pay all costs, and merit isn’t likely (GT, UWash, and so forth).

There are some schools that would give you merit for your stats, but with your instate choices, not sure you need them unless your budget is $10k per year.

@mom2collegekids Yeah my budget is 40k per year. I was thinking of applying to all UC’s except Merced as well as Cal Poly and San Jose State. Do you think I have a shot at a scholarship at USC??

Thank You so much for the feedback. Really appreciate it

IF you took the PSAT AND you scored above Calif’s NMF cut off score AND you are accepted at USC [ which is not easy for anyone] then you will be awarded a 1/2 tuition scholarship.

@menloparkmom
I did take the PSAT but unfortunately I did not get the NMF, I didnt even get the commended letter.

Probably not at USC. My kid had high SAT and GPA but only got meager merit aid. Something along the line of $5k. Her sister who is a USC grad said to call financial aid but kid #2 decided on another school already.

No, your scores isn’t high enough. USC rejects kids with an ACT 32.

My friend’s D had an ACT 35 and got NOTHING from USC, so she went to MIT instead.
