Need help finding safeties and matches

That makes sense on why it costs more. I know some universities give room and board scholarships as well.

I’ll apply to UVA because it’s a selective school, but has a 20% admission rate or something like that, which isn’t bad. Safeties is what I’m struggling with the most, but I’m trying to find some good matches as well where I may have a chance at a scholarship.

My D was accepted to UVA OOS, but since she did not get the Jefferson scholarship that acceptance came with a $70k price tag. Keep in mind that the Jefferson Scholarship (and some other competitive scholarships at other colleges) require a nomination from your high school so make sure to discuss with your GC.

You may not feel that Washington & Lee (W&L) is a good fit for you (it is not for everyone), but I brought it up because it awards so many full rides (relatively speaking) there is a better chance. For example, approximately 10% of freshman at W&L are awarded the Johnson while about 1% of freshman at UVA get the Jefferson.

I was considering W&L in the past. I was also looking at W&M. I’m trying to find more colleges with lots of scholarships, but I’m having some trouble. I would apply to OSU, but I don’t know how well that would work out.

You may not know the answer to this question, but what do you think of Gettysburg for me? I know it’s most likely not a safety, I just want an opinion on it

They’re not as generous with merit as some of the others mentioned so far.

I didn’t see anybody mention Gettysburg. At least not on this thread

Right, I’m saying Gettysburg is not as generous with merit as the others that were mentioned.

I don’t know much about Gettysburg. I did a quick lookup of the COA and merit options and I don’t think it will be affordable. The COA is $74,330 and the highest merit scholarship is $40k.

Sorry, it’s been a long week. My apologies

Okay, that’s probably not going to work. I wish I could find some more safeties and matches. This is hard

What did you think of some of the other suggestions? College of Charleston, Furman, Stetson, etc… I won’t go back through the thread and list them all. :grinning:

Wheaton in MA gives very good merit, but I don’t think you wanted north.

Safeties must offer an assured large enough scholarship for stats that you have, in addition to assured admission.

Matches must have a reasonably likely chance of getting a large enough scholarship, which is typically much more difficult than admission.

I believe colleges in FL will require that you submit test scores - unless they’ve changed their stance on that. Your SAT won’t be high enough for any award from Florida State.

I agree with others that UVA & WF would not be affordable for you. If you were able to get in, I don’t think your stats would net you any merit scholarships from these schools.

Keep in mind that some colleges require test scores for merit awards (others have developed separate merit awards for T.O. applicants). You’d have to google individual colleges to see what their scholarship policies are.

Assuming that you’re going to receive scholarships without considering the realities of post-Covid admissions is a dangerous mind-set. Find colleges that you can reasonably afford using the net price calculators. Look for merit at schools where you are in the top percentages, stat-wise. Colleges in the south that tend to give decent merit: University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, University of Alabama (although you’d have to be at the very top of their admissions pool in order to get a full tuition scholarship).

Miami of Ohio & U of Dayton, although not in the south, have given pretty good merit to applicants from our HS.

No doubt that there are private colleges that give generous merit to top applicants, which reduce the pricey cost of attendance down to a reasonable level, but unless you’re a top applicant, I don’t think you would see enough of a reduction to make a private affordable - so search for one where you are near the top.

Dining plans are almost always required if you live on campus, so add another $3000 a semester.

This. It was mentioned upthread that TO will be a problem with the high merit awards, but it is good this was emphasized by @CollegeNerd67 so that point isn’t lost.

UNC-Wilmington is a good school.

The problem with the UNC system schools, as I see it, is that you are unlikely to get much if any merit aid because you are an OOS student; and the children of taxpaying, North Carolina citizens are going to get first priority.

I think that you are unlikely as an OOS admit to William & Mary (test scores are a “very important” admissions factor) or UVA (test scores are an “important” admissions factor), not only because of the admission criteria but also because the admission of OOS students are capped – it used to be around 25% of the entering freshman class at UVA, I’m not sure what it is now, it may be less – and if you are admitted, I doubt that you would qualify for much if any merit aid at either of those schools as an OOS student. If you hit the jackpot and were awarded a Jefferson Scholarship to attend UVA, then obviously that would be an exception; but that is a nominated scholarship and the competition is extremely tough because all the students are at an elite academic level.

Yes - few and far between, especially given the op’s stats. She could try Western Carolina, which has some sort of tuition guarantee program (not sure if it applies to oos applicants), East Carolina University or, as someone upthread suggested, UNC Asheville.

Please don’t be passive aggressive…those are safeties…not matches

Yes, I’m aware. I’m looking at some good matches for now.
