Hi,
My son is becoming a junior this year
and is about to register classes.
He wants to apply for phychology.
so between ap psychology and
ap capstone for junior year, which subject makes him more competitive for
admissions?
Any words would be welcomed.
Thank you
What classes is he currently taking and what other classes would be take?
Either one will be fine for college applications.
This ONE course choice won’t make him more competitive…or less competitive.
Either one is fine. If he scores well in psychology he may get exempt from the class if it is a college requirement.
That will give him room to take something else.
Neither. He should take the course that aligns more with his future plans/has the better teacher/has the better results on the AP exams or just about any other parameter other than looking good to colleges; they won’t care.
I agree with everyone else, but what is AP capstone? Is that an official AP course, or just something your school calls AP?
Psychology majors need math (especially statistics), need to know how to read and analyze, need to write well.
Like anyone else… Have him take a regular HS course of study and do well in it. Nothing magical about psychology.
@mathmom It’s a real course.

Don’t ask me my personal opinion of it; it won’t be pretty. ![]()
Since turning to 11th,
My son and I are getting nervous.
Thanks for your advice.
@skieurope LOL. I had a feeling it was something invented since my kids graduated from high school!
@skieurope, actually I’m curious about your opinion. The AP Capstone program (AP Seminar & AP Research) seems like a great idea in theory, and to me addresses the big difference between the AP and IB programs mainly the IB Extended Essay. I don’t know anything about the realities of the two courses though. My son’s school isn’t offering AP Capstone so for me I’m just generally curious.
My answer would derail the thread, which is not in good form. If you really want my opinion, feel free to PM or to start a new thread. @gwnorth
