I want to be a better writer. One little quirky way I practice is by taking an already-written piece of text (say a paragraph from a newspaper article) and trying to rephrase it in my own words. I try to see if I can come up with a paragraph that’s shorter and sweeter than the original one.

I came across a small paragraph that I just can’t crack. I want to rephrase this paragraph in a pithier way without sacrificing the information it contains, but I’m having trouble. This is just for fun and practice, and I thought maybe somebody here could offer some help. Here is the paragraph:

“After the World War II, Korea was divided into two nations: Communist North and Democratic South. The Korean War which was instigated by North Korea in 1950 devastated the whole Korean peninsula. Now, the two nations are still under the state of suspended war. The tension runs high even at this very moment.”

(It’s from a Korean movie called Shiri.)
