Need help - Phantom of the Opera costume question

Hi,

I’ve been searching the web and I’m stuck - I’m sewing a Phantom of the Opera costume for my son for a masquerade party and I can’t figure out the cape. Is it red inside and out, black outside with a white/ivory inside or black outside with a black/glitter inside? I know he’d prefer any of the black combinations but I don’t know which is accurate. Can someone help or point me in the right direction? He’s planning on wearing the white half mask. When does the Phantom wear the opera hat?

thanks

I don’t know if it will help at all, but if you go to simplicity.com, pattern 4482 is a Phantom costume. It just shows it in black, though.

Thanks - I actually saw that pattern and ended up buying a similiar one (on sale) - I think the half mask will make it obvious that its the Phantom. I found one cape that has ivory inside and the black glitter one which are both nice. Unless I can figure our something more accurate I’ll probably go with one of those.

Well I’m going to assume you’re looking for accuracy with the stage show version.

The one with the ivory inside would probably be more accurate. But if you can find one that is really dark grey inside that would be more accurate. And he wears the fedora in the show when he takes Christine from behind her mirror and when they’re on the boat.

There is another “look” in the graveyard scene where his cape is completely black inside and out and has sequins on the shoulders. He also wears a black hat with a feather in it for this scene.

The easier look would probably the one from act two, unless you’re willing to sew the sequins and things onto the cape.

The stage show version is what I was looking for. I think I’ll go with the black and ivory… maybe the fedora too.

Thanks so much for the help. This was driving me crazy!
