Need help rating my profile for colleges

Hai guyz

Well I have been doing research on the collegeboard site looking for colleges that arent streches, but are located around NYC or any big city. I like the ambience of big citys.

Basicly I was wondering if you could help me, in naming some schools for me that I could look into with big campuses, I am sorry I am not oxbridge/Ivy league material.

Here is my profile

Attended freshman year at st johns military school, earned awards for outstanding community service, honor guard, and drill team) Also was a squad leader. Thats just freshman, the rest I am homeschooled,(because my parents are religious nuts, but im not) and have about average 2.7 gpa, I can get it to 3.3 gpa by time i graduate.

Was employed summer of 05 by university of Illinois cleaning offices in summer, this was extremely selective and I got paid about 1500 a month. Only for 3 :frowning:

Was employed by panda express, for 8 months in 2007 got a raise for good with money, excellent cashier.

Winter of 07 I got a job at Gamestop as greeter, survived holiday season and out of 17 hired people, me and another guy where chosen to stay ( I still have the job) since then I have been promoted to GA, witch is still very low, but I am usually the 3rd best seller when I get hours, ( my boss is going to write recommendation).

I also worked at burger king for 2 months in summer of 08

I have kept these jobs in order to pay for homeschooling, since my parents are too poor lol, the broke their earning to pay the hefty 30k a year for the freshman year at military school.

Well, I am not excellent at all, just homeschool kid with average grades that works alot, and wants to go to college. I am minority, and my parents never graduated highschool.

I just took the ACT today, am not sure how I scored, but it all seemed very easy.

Tell me truth, yeah as you can see, I am not ivy league mats, so what am I? Community college material? Thanks for response.

Well, Cash, not many people are offering any guidance to you, and I think that’s because folks might feel they need a bit more concrete detail (e.g., some test scores) to consider. It would be easier to offer advice after you see how you did on the ACT, so perhaps you could start another thread when you get those results? Good luck.

It doesn’t sound as though your home schooling adds up to a college preparation curriculum. I can tell you are bright, but are you ready for college? You might need to attend some community college classes to get a set of grades that schools could look at. Then there is the issue of money. It’s a complex situation to figure out, and one that is not at all common. Would you be able to talk to the college adviser at your local high school?

Don’t overlook the state schools in the midwest. Even though most are not in large cities, they offer plenty of opportunities and also a wide range of classes so that you could fill in your areas of weakness.

BTW, I have a relative who works at St. John’s. It seems like a decent school, just not a good fit for a lot of kids.

I will post my ACT scores as soon as I get them, maybe in the next few weeks online, I just took it a few days ago, but I was getting 24-26 on the practice ones.

thanks for being honest, you are probably right, I was thinking I should go to a community college before I hit the 4 years institutions, I really wanted to go to public highschool, but I just move every month to my moms, dads, a lot. even keeping a job is very hard ( partime). they are both Jehovah witnesses and don’t believe in sending me to public schools, not my views, but theirs. Yeah I went to st johns for many reasons, my dad moves a lot, and that was the time my parents where in court over my custody so I cant really travel with him on his job. I wanted to go, sounded like a new experience and boarding school doesn’t sound bad. When people see military school, they think some school where kids get sent to because they misbehave or where they get beat, but this isn’t the case in st johns, many students go there because they want to, and they never beat anyone, its only 8 week training program of hell they make you go through, then its not that bad.

Of course I wanted to return for sophmore year, but my parents could barely pay the first year bill, so I didnt want to make it harder on them, accepted to stay homeschool, and am helping them out. It is only recently I wanted to go to college, I know I dont want to work paycheck by paycheck in life. My parents never told me" study hard and go to college" but I know that is only because they where raised in mexico and its very different there than here, I came from mexico with my mom because of the divorce, at age 3.

Community college doesn’t seem bad for me actually, and thanks for the advice.

Cash-
I think you would benefit from the CC in more ways than you know. For one thing, just being in an educational setting with career-minded people would be a big step in the right direction. It’s not right that you are going through all of this on your own. You do need to end the moving between your parents. Do you feel like you have any say in this at all? What about when you turn 18?
