Need help with a BB math question

p. 869

[DIAGRAM]

The figure above shows the dimensions of a pedestal constructed of 4 layers of marble. Each layer is a rectangular solid that is 1 foot high and has a square base. How many cubic feet of marble make up the pedestal?

Thanks.

Well, each 1x1x1 block is 1 cubic foot. You just count up how many there are:
1 + 4 + 9 + 16 = 30

Wait, I don’t get it. So the first cubic block is 1, but what makes the ones below it 4, 9, and 16?

The highest level is 1x1 right?

And the ones under it are 2x2, 3x3, 4x4.
