Help! We have moved in Boston before, but arrived that day, Sept 1, with all our stuff in 2 vans. This time we need to be out of apartment by noon on the 31st of Aug and can’t get in until noon on Sept 1. I’m not sure everything will fit in the vehicles we have available. Also, hotels are very expensive in Boston. Any ideas for places to store stuff for a day or two and more affordable places to stay? We are trying not to stay to far away as we are aware of the terrible traffic on move in day. We are in the Brookline area. We would consider renting Uhaul, but not sure how far out we will need to go to get one at this late date. Thanks!

Did you ask your current landlord if you could stay an extra day? If they do not have someone moving in Sept 1st they may be willing to let you stay for a fee.

OK…we (and thousands of others) had the same issue one year. Here is what we did. DH rented the UHaul truck. He picked up “stuff” from two locations on August 31. Then they drove OUT of Boston for the night and actually spent the night in Plymouth at a friend’s house. There isn’t ANY place I know of where you can park a fully loaded UHaul on the Boston streets or in any public parking lot overnight. Believe me…DH checked!

Then he told the kids (he had them with him) that they WERE going to be back in Boston before 7 a.m. so they at least had a chance of finding a parking space near the new place on Sept 1. This is what they did…and lucky them…there was a space right in front of the building.

Good luck trying to get an extra day. Most landlords need time to clean between tenants…and most new tenants have leases that start on September 1.

P.S. not sure where you are coming from…we live in CT and did a round trip UHaul rental from near our home…no problem.

There is a Uhaul location in Brookline … and a Budget location in Brighton (right outside Brookline) … no idea if either has anything to rent that weekend. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Can you park a UHaul in the public parking lot in Brookline? We have parked cars there in the past - we had to go to the police station to pay for it. I seem to recall that it was a fairly good-sized lot.

^ good point. Most street parking in Brookline has a 2 hour limit and no overnight parking … not sure about the rules about the public parking lots though. The police can give temporary parking permits for on street overnight parking. Maybe a call to them will provide some options.

Um…when my husband checked back in 2007, he was told NO trucks in the public lots overnight. Cars, fine but no trucks. The reasons seem obvious to me!

Call and check, however. Maybe this has changed.

An extra day is not an option. She already lives in Brookline, just changing apartments and roommates. We live 6 hours away so packing up and driving home is not an option. I am going to check out a u haul rental and hotel a little bit out of town where it can be parked.

Everyone has got it covered, but I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. September 1st is a hellacious day here (but I do love Allston Christmas).

Booking UHaul this late may well involve going quite a distance outside of the city. Do heed the advice to get into the city as early as possible. It really helps to have 3 people on deck for the move, so 2 can be in and out, with the 3rd person watching the vehicle.

It is a little unclear from your post if you are moving into Brookline or starting in Brookline. If you are coming from a distance and can’t find UHaul within proximity to Boston, consider trying to find a rental center on your route towards Boston. Hotels outside of the city without parking garages may be easiest with multiple vehicles and a UHaul.

There are hotels in Waltham, though there are also several colleges there who might have students moving in then.

Good luck!

There is a Motel 6 in Braintree about 10 miles outside of Boston. I frequently see trucks parked there overnight. It is right off the highway, Rte 3 Union Street Exit. Not the fanciest place to stay, but should be OK for one night.

Daughter is already in Brookline, but changing to another apartment, also in Brookline. New Roommate is also currently in Brookline. We are coming from 6 hours away with a truck. We have experienced the sept 1 Boston move in day previously, ugh. I don’t need to worry about moving the roommate, but could consolidate with them if feasible. I don’t think all of Ds stuff will fit into one truck. I realize it is late to be renting a uhaul at this point…

Nothing to really add, other than good luck.

Been there, done that (in Brookline/Brighton) with D1 after college graduation. I do think by not reserving a U-Haul at this point, is going to limit your options.

Thankfully she owns a condo in South Boston now, so no more moves for many years!

Would you consider driving the car to Newton and parking on one of the neighborhood streets for the night. You could stay in the Newton Marriott, Indigo Hotel or the Sheraton in Needham.
Newton doesn’t have overnight parking restrictions. There are a ton of streets off Beacon street between Newton Highlands and Waban that you could park on.

Also, does she have any friends that rent homes or know of anyone with a home where she could park. Lots of Luck to you!!!

-- another thought-- there is a doubletree in Waltham that has a large parking lot.

I am currently in Boston, leaving today with a whole van full of “stuff”. I finally got D to realize that she has too much stuff to fit into one van all in one trip. She is sending extras and winter things home with me. I will bring it back to her sometime in the fall. She has also made arrangements to store some things for one or two days. Hopefully it will work out. I will not be here on move in day, so I guess it won’t be my problem. : )

this place would be close and relatively cheap … http://www.priceline.com/hotel/hotelOverviewGuide.do?key=hkcfuyts&propID=43455&jsk=554a200a504a200a20130814111017c62021618873&plf=PCLN
