understand from another post that freshmen english is taught by TA

interested in major/minor in some combination of the following…econ, political science, history, philosophy

1) in these areas how much TA involvement should be expected?
2) if TAs involved, do they teach or run review sessions?
3) if they teach, is it primarily intro classes or could it go higher than that?
4) what do people say is the quality of the teaching?

My understanding is that TA’s run the recitations and sometimes labs, but do not teach the courses. Usually they will also hold reviews before 4 o’clocks. Here is a quote from the website:

"Lehigh prides itself on its professors’ commitment to teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students. Every class is taught by a professor, and Lehigh TAs are just that – assistants to those professors. It isn’t likely that you find this to be the case at every university you explore.

And even though these professors are teaching and advising, they are also researchers of the highest caliber. Because of our professors’ balance of teaching and research, students are exposed to the most current tools and techniques in the field. And what’s more, their students – both undergrad and grad – are shoulder to shoulder with them in the lab, rolling up their sleeves and creating new knowledge and innovation."

My son waived English so I cannot tell you if that is taught by a TA, but I would be surprised based upon the information on the Lehigh website.

The quality of the teaching at Lehigh is a major reason my son went there and loves it there!

In my experience, TAs typically teach recitations and oversee labs for introductory courses. The only class I’ve taken where a TA has taught the class itself is freshman English, and I’ve heard they teach a few other English courses on occasion. I took Intro to Economics and TAs only run recitation. I also took a philosophy course where there was no TA. The ability of TAs to teach I’ve had range from very good to just ok. Professors, I’ve found, are often good at teaching and usually very interested in the subject matter and helping the students learn the material (not that I haven’t had somewhat bad professors, too, but the good outnumber the bad). Honestly, the teaching quality at Lehigh is comparable to most other universities, and 99% of the time you shouldn’t be worried that TAs with teach your classes.

i’m a freshmen at Lehigh.
TAs only run the recitation classes. The actual classes are given by Professors.
And about freshmen English, except for International students, freshmen English classes are given by grad students. Only International Students’ English classes are given by professors from the ESL department.

Don’t stress about the TAs coz some TAs are really good and since recitation class size is usually small, they can turn better than your actual classes…

if you have academics as your top priority, do consider Lehigh!
