PROMPT 1: Are people who stay in the same community happier than those who move from one place to another?
Essay:
In this world of living, people usually prefer a stable life to a peripatetic one because settling down in one place helps build strong relationships. However, as the saying goes “ Traveling is an effective way to renew oneself”. An itinerant life that involves moving from place to place sometimes helps people feel safer as well as leads them to new knowledge and inspiration. This universal notion can be seen through literature and lives of writers.
One illustration of the how a nomadic life benefits people can be seen through the novel Les Miserables. Its author, Victor Hugo acknowledged that moving from place to place is the best way to hide oneself from enemies; therefore, he demonstrated his awareness through Jean Valjean, who is chased aggressively by detective Javert as an act to send Valjean back to jail. Everywhere Jean Valjean goes, Javert follows. Therefore, in order to assure the safety of himself and his daughter, Jean Valjean moves to a new place once he feels Javert is nearby. The fact that he moves from towns to towns, staying no longer than three months in one place at first sounds arduous, but ultimately secures the lives of Jean Valjean and his daughter. Thanks to an unstable but safe life, Jean Valjean can live happily with his daughter as well as escape from Javert.
Another illustration of the fact that moving from place to place is beneficial to people can be seen through the case of Huyenchip, a famous Vietnamese writer. She is a talented writer who has published books about her traveling experience around the world, which entice thousands of people. The root of that attraction lies in her itinerant life, as she chose to live nomadically a few years ago after she decided to be a writer. At the first stage of her career, she did not know what to write and eventually suffered from writers’ blocks issue. Then, she decided to travel to another country in order to find new inspiration. It was a brilliant decision that traveling to new place not only brought her new knowledge but also became her inspiration for her books. Later in her career, she admitted that if she had stayed permanently in one place, she would never have overcome the writer’s block issues that could cost her her career.
In conclusion, as explained by the lives of Jean Valjean and Huyenchip, an itinerant life holds more advantages than does a stable life, as it offers people safety and knowledge. Therefore, people should not hesitate moving from place to place since an unstable life can be happy too.
PROMPT 2: Should leaders follow their own convictions or submit to public opinion?
Essay:
In this world of living, leaders sometimes follow the saying “Following your own heart “ because they believe they are wise and discerning enough to make good decisions on their own. However, this is problematic because leaders do not always know everything, which means they can make bad decisions due to the lack of information. Moreover, not paying attention to others shows a sign of a bossy leaders who cannot earn respect from other people. Therefore, submitting to public opinion benefits leaders greatly, which can be seen through lives of billionaires and literature.
One illustration of the fact that taking heed to others’ opinion benefits leaders can be seen through the case of the king of steel industry, Dale Carnegie. He is described as one of the greatest chairmen of the twentieth century thanks to his ability to listen to others. As the leader of the company, he always paid attention to ideas of his employees once the company had to make a new plan or project. This trait showed that he respectfully considered every ideas before making any decisions. Since he paid respect to his employees, the in return lionized him and followed his instructions unyieldingly. A survey at the time showed that his company offered one of the most comfortable workplace, as it possessed an open environment where everyone’s voice had a strength. Dale Carnegie admitted that a bossy leader will struggle with resistance from his employees, while a considerate one will have full support of others. Thanks to the support he received, his company became successful quickly
Another illustration of why a leader should listen to pubic opinion is demonstrated by the novel Game of thrones. In the novel, Tommen Baratheon is a despot king who decides everything himself. He thinks he is discerning enough to make wise decisions to execute the life of the former king’s counselor. He leaves out his own counselor’s warnings that killing the man will raise the tension between the king and the people who respected that man, which will also lead to an insurgent from the civillian. As a result, due to his taking no heed to others’ ideas, the civillian revolts, which later causes the king his life. He paid no attention to others, making a bad decision, and his ending was tragic.
In conclusion, as explained by the lives of Dale Carnegie and King Tommen, submitting to public opinion holds more advantages than does ignoring others’ ideas. Therefore, leaders shoulde never leave out their public opinion.
