Need help!

I am wondering if my daughter should get a summer intership like working in the lab, or hospital or some high tech company or fast food store or… taking more summer classes? We like to have more school credits but I think the summer intership is also very important for junior.

Does it matter what type of summer jobs are? Does it matter how many hours of the summer jobs have? I meant, to ivies???

Have heard mixed opinions about this…from doing something exotic to stand out from the crowd …to work at Burger King to show you can be a team player and interact with the general public. So many kids seek out the unique I wonder if they really are unique at all?

Had one adcom rep suggest to me that the kids should simply do whatever they want…and keep their grades up in the fall!!!

Do you know when take on line courses, will they be counted as credits? For example, I live in California. I would like the credits be transferrable to UC system. I have been looking for these on line courses links, I do not know how to tell which course could be used and so it is worthy to take it?

Let me rephrase… My D’s school does not accept the college course credit. When applying, do we calculate the GPA? If the credits is not transferrable to UC, can we still calculate into GPA? Irregardless whether the credits are transferrable or not, can we include them in the GPA caculation? I am sorry if I am not clear. I find I don’t think clearly in the middle of the day already…

desperate ~ Are you home-schooling? If your D is in public high school won’t they be the ones who calculate the GPA and send it to the UC schools as part of the application?

My D. attends a private high school which does not accept other credits outside school. So I heard that we need to send the transcript from college ourself along the application and put down the “new” GPA ourselves. Since I am in california, I would like to make sure all the credits are UC transferrable… But does it matter? If we take a on line course from some place outside California and I don’t know if it is UC transferrable, would I still be able to include it in the GPA??

I don’t know how the UC’s handle things, but for other colleges, your D will send all transcripts to the colleges that she is applying to, and the colleges will use whatever formula they use to determine her GPA.

When you’re deciding among a number of productive ways to spend free time, just go with what’s best for the student & family and don’t worry about the adcoms. One job or internship or class rather than another is unlikely to make the difference – what matters is that the student stays busy with activities that interest and challenge her.

College likes to see Junior spend summer time in real world experience. Is it not? My D. school 's Juniors usually get internship of all kinds ( including abroad) or attend classes at ivies… I like her to get more classes credits, but it is hard for her to work and study during summer time…The schedule always conflicts.

I would echo Hanna’s post. Perhaps it would be best for you and your daughter to relieve some stress and have her do what she wants to do this summer and not worry about how an admissions office is going to view this one very tiny part of her application.

My daughter took a correspondence course through Berkeley Extension. Her public high school put the course on the transcript along with her grade, but the grade was not calculated into the GPA. We are told that we should submit the Berkeley transcript along with her applications next year.
