<p>xiggi - totally off topic here, but maybe you can clear something up for me (you would know for sure):</p>

<p>Which is correct? “That is the principle reason for …” or “That is the principal reason for …”</p>

<p>Somewhere deep in my mind, I see the pal as the answer that looks right, but somehow, the “principal is a pal” rule, meaning the “pal” is a person, doesn’t fit.</p>

<p>Sorry for the diversion, but now’s my chance to get this straight.</p>

<p>Principal is both a noun and an adjective. As an adjective, it means ‘foremost’, as in “the principal hobby of democrats is to whine”, and as a noun, usually refers to a person or funds, or has legal implications.</p>

<p>What is scary is that the people that vetted this person are the same ones deciding who is gonna get spied on, whose called are tapped, mail read, doesn’t it give you a warm and fuzzy feeling that the Bush people have bee checked for honesty so very thoroughly and we are to trust the government to not make errors in spying on Americans</p>

<p>One of my beliefs is that Republicans have a very hard time getting qualified individuals to serve in the government. This occurs because most Republicans intensely dislike the government and don’t want to be involved. Also the salaries aren’t high enough to attract the best qualified, and since the days of Henry Cabot Lodge public service doesn’t rate high among Republicans. So unless it’s a secretarial level appointment good people are going to be hard to find.</p>

<p>It is especially difficult, which I have mentioned before, to get qualified individuals with Republican credentials to serve in civil rights-related positions. It’s a no-win situation for them. No glory ever comes to a Republican, either within his party or in general, for serving as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in ED, although it did work out to an appointment to the supremes for Clarence Thomas.</p>

<p>Now there is another problem that we are seeing now, which relates to being in a second term. There’s nobody left to fill the jobs. All the really good appointees served in the first term and a president often struggles to find people to fill positions especially lower level ones in the second term. It will get even worse the last two years of the administration and you will find many positions filled by career employees on an acting basis. The only political appointees around on the last day of the Bush term will be those who are otherwise unemployable.</p>
