And thanks, in advance. :)

Do you know what area of Charlotte their job will be in? Does this person have kids and need to choose a place to live based on school assignments?
Do they want to be in Charlotte or a suburb?

No kids. Working at Carolina’s Medical Center. Apartment, probably, for a year or so. Then will hopefully have a better feel for the area of the city to purchase in.

Traffic in the area is bad for a city of its size. Have them check their commute during whatever their rush hour will be so that they know what direction from their place of employment may be best.

katwkittens has a couple of kids in grad school in NC and lives in state. You could PM her or perhaps she will chime in.

Lived here over 20 yrs. wonderful place. CMC area is great with lots of options for housing nearby. PM with specific questions. Charlotte is very welcoming to newcomers. Easy to meet people.

I think it is a great idea to rent first and then decide where to live. I drive a lot for work so I like to be central to everything. Hard to know what else to say without knowing what questions your friend has.

Thanks for the encouraging words, everyone. Any recommendations for:

-restaurants near the hospital
-coffee shops that are nearby that are good
-maybe residential areas to AVOID near the hospital?

Great suggestion. Hoever, this guy will be a surgical resident, so his hours will vary GREATLY.

So I am thinking the commute needs to be one you can do when half-asleep??

I moved to Charlotte last August and love it. That said, more seasoned Charlottinians might be better at restaurant reviews and such. I believe the CMC is in or near Dilworth, which has a ton of up and coming restaurants. Uptown is nearby, with even more nice restaurants.

We are a fan of Roosters, either Uptown or their South Park location. 131 Main is another restaurant we love.

Don’t shy away from Uptown on a Saturday night. We went to see a show there last weekend and couldn’t believe the live entertainment on the streets. It’s very happening down there.

When we got to Charlotte we started out in South Park. That is a very nice area a bit south of Uptown. I’ve been told that you don’t want to go too far east or west for housing, but staying north and south of Uptown is good.

If he doesn’t have normal hours, I wouldn’t worry about the commute. They have rush hour here that actually is an hour. (Yeah, California, not so much…) The rest of the time traffic isn’t bad unless there is some sort of accident.

We’ve lived in Charlotte/Mecklenburg Co. for more than thirty years. I worked at CMC many years ago.
I would think a young male sugical resident would want to be “in town” meaning close to CMC (which is right in the middle of Charlotte) rather than out in the areas of big suburban homes/with mini-vans and 2.5 kids. My 26 yr. old S has friends that live uptown and love it. Lots of things to do in the area…although a surgical resident might not have a lot of time to enjoy them!

Agree w/ UCDAlum…do not go to west Charlotte or beyond Plaza-Midwood/Elizabeth on the east side.
We lived in Plaza Midwood when I worked at the hospital. It’s an easy commute.

Some good areas close to CMC to consider…Plaza-Midwood, Elizabeth,Dilworth,Myers Park, Freedom Park area,South End or even uptown Charlotte.

Thanks so much, Packmom and UCDAlum ! That is just the kind of info I wanted…
