Visiting Loyola this weekend on Saturday. Will be driving in from friends house in the suburbs. Tour will be ending by 1pm - I’d rather not jump in the car and drive around the downtown area and try to re-park. Any suggestions of a casual place to catch lunch on a Saturday afternoon, walking distance from campus?

Abasket, hopefully you will get more responses. We were in that area last year and had some trouble finding somewhere fun to eat. Ended up eating at Potbelly’s which wasn’t what we were thinking of.

Some suggestions, when you get to the area if you bring up tripadvisor it will show what is close. I thought that was a pretty good resource.

Walk a ways and go up Michigan Ave. tons of great places up there. It didn’t seem like we saw much around that campus area other than fast food and chains.

Hope you get some great suggestions.

I hope you are thinking the downtown campus, if not never mind.

My daughter is in grad school at Loyola and spends most of her time downtown. However, the Lakeshore Campus is so beautiful!! I hope you like it. Last time we were there, we crossed Sheridan Road to BopNGrill, which is a funky, fun place with a different twist on fast food – kimchee fries, umami burgers, etc. Their website is bngrill.com. SP Kebab on Sheridan gets good reviews on yelp too. (Yelp restaurants in Rogers Park). Giordano’s and Leona’s are both a few blocks north up Sheridan if you want to try real Chicago pizza. And if you like breakfast for lunch, there is an Ann Sather on Granville, a little south and a little west of campus, with the best cinnamon rolls you could ask for as well as lots of other yummy things – a real Chicago institution!

Well now I am confused too over which campus abasket means, since she refers to driving around the downtown area (?). Lakeshore is north in Rogers Park; downtown is near Water Tower. I just gave you Rogers Park suggestions, but if you are going to be downtown, I am sure I can ask my daughter!

I’m assuming you’re talking about Rogers Park, because there are great restaurants piled up around the Water Tower campus.

This wouldn’t be walking distance, but you could leave your car parked and take the Red Line L a few stops to Argyle for fabulous Vietnamese food. Tank Noodle is an institution – fantastic, cheap food and huge portions.

Yes, Lakeshore campus, not downtown.

My son did his student teaching for Chicago Public Schools and loved in the Gold Coast area so we did that scene pretty well and didn’t feel the need to head “downtown” again. Sounds like restaurants in Rodgers City is what we should look for??? The above suggestions sounds good so far.

I need to put trip advisor on my phone!!

Rogers Park. Have fun!

The pizza places on Sheridan are good! Gosh…glad to hear they are still there. I haven’t been there in years!

During the summer they rent out some of their nicer apartment dorms near Water Tower. I think they told me that a shuttle runs between the two campuses. You can make a mini vacation out of this trip.

BopNGrill looks fun - will have to run the menu by my youngest D (who is the Loyola candidate) who does NOT eat burgers!!!

And of course, pizza always works and is a treat when in Chicago!

Giordano’s (sp?) and Portillos are institutions that are always worth it when I am in Chicago. Pizza at the former, dogs and Italian beef at the latter. Too bad Taste of Chicago is over for this year…

We love Portillos for a fast easy meal. We don’t have trouble finding CHICAGO restaurants - we’ve visited frequently! Just not familiar with the area right around Loyola-Lakeshore campus. Since we’ll be driving in from the suburbs and back to the suburbs, not interested in venturing into the main drag this time (although the idea of hopping on the train at Loyola could be an option). Would just assume walk/explore the close area near campus - if there are options and it’s safe!

IMHO Giordano’s pizza isn’t the same since they went through bankruptcy and some corp bought them. Crust is now like eating thick cardboard. Prices went up too. For good Chicago pizza now you need to go to Lou Malnati’s, Uno’s or Pizzaria Due. The butter crust at these places is to die for.

Actually Taste of Chicago is going on now, through this weekend.

abasket, Rogers Park can be a little rough around the edges, especially way up by the Howard el stop, but exploring around campus should be just fine! You will see lots of little places to eat.

Thanks for the suggestions all! It was a rainy Saturday but we were able to have 1/2 of our tour without rain! Good thing we didn’t plan to go to “Taste of Chicago” as it ended up being cancelled Saturday!

We had lunch at BopNGrill - we spotted it while exploring and thought why go further? Enjoyed the Korean bbque, kimchee fries and S tried the philly steak egg roll.

Appreciate the suggestions!

Hope you enjoyed Loyola! And glad you enjoyed lunch!
