Need Moving Advice

Help! The moving van arrives on Monday, but escrow on my next house has been delayed. I’ll be living out of a suitcase for at least 2 weeks in my empty house with our cat and dog. What should I keep out of the moving van? New house is 3 hours away.

Cat pan.
Water bowl.

I’m assuming they are taking ALL of your furniture? Keep a few things out such as toiletries, clothes, paper towles, a pillow and blanket. You can go to the nearest wal-mart/target and pick up an air mattress ~$20 and an electric air pump ~$12 to sleep on.

Keep a pad of paper and a pen with you and write down what you use every day that is essential. Pack using that list.

Thanks for the advice. Great idea about writing down what I use each day. I can’t think straight right now, so I really appreciate the help.

OK, I used to do this all the time (military families move alot!)

Essentials:
Towels/bath mat/shampoo/conditioner
Sheets/Blanket
Inflatable mattress
clothes/hygene kits/essentials like you were going on vacation
Microwave oven
cooking containers for oven
paper plates/cups/forks/knives/etc
laundry detergent/woolite
basic spices
non-perishable food items
lamp?

That should get you started. Keep it simple, since you have to move everything you keep, but keep enough to be comfortable!

a folding chair and your laptop

Hit the what do I pack for college threads and downsize from there.

pillow, some hangers, shave, passport, deodorant, cotton buds,
hair dryer, comb, brush, make-up, moisturizer, slippers, eye glasses,
laptop, charger, usb, cellphone and charger, earphones, pjs,
hand steamer or iron and ironing board,
vitamins and medicines you need
doggie poop bag, dog brush & toothpaste, collar, leash

All papers related to both moves. Passports, extra checks and extra car keys.

^^Yes, don’t forget the papers. In fact, knowing me, I’d have at least 2 filing crates that they sell in Staples or Office Depot that contain folders of your most important papers:
YTD bank, brokerage, 529 statements, birth certificates and the like, credit card statements, medical records, vision & dental records which you may use for FSA reimbursement, paperwork of your animals such as their license and recent vaccinations, tax statements for the past 5 years, car title certificate, certificate of authenticity for any paintings and jewelry you own.

I knew I could rely on CC parents. After being in this house 24 years, the panic is setting in. You don’t know how much better I feel hearing from all of you. Really good ideas - I think I can do this now.

You will not be able to move into your new house for 2 weeks, so you won’t need to pay mortgage (rent) for 2 weeks. I would move into a temporary housing (hotel) with a kitchen, then I would only need my clothes and laptop.

Don’t forget any medication’s, first aid, quick clean up supplies, radio.

Do you still own the old house (living in an empty house for 2 weeks)? Do you know what the moving company is going to charge you to store everything for 2 weeks?

If you still own the old house, maybe you can delay the movers for 2 weeks.

We need to clear out the old house to get it ready to sell. Luckily it’s a corporate relocation, so storage is paid for.

This gets my vote! Since it is a corporate move, maybe the company would pick up the cost of the hotel room…I’d check it out.

My sister has offered to put me up, so I won’t have to sleep on an air mattress! I’m mostly concerned about important paperwork, valuables, etc. that I should keep with me. I’ve received some really good advice about that here, so I thank everyone for their help.

And think about boarding the pets for two weeks. Again, maybe corporate relocation can help with that. Not having the cat and dog to worry about in a disrupted or temporary place will make things easier for you.

Don’t pack the toilet paper!
