Need opinion: going back to school for pre-med

Hi guys I’ve dropped out of college for a long time (3 years to be exact) and decided that I should go back to school this coming fall 2012. The thing is that I want to change major. When I was at CSUS I was a Business Administration student but now I would like to go to medical school to become a doctor. Now I would like to ask for your opinion about the 2 paths that I thought about taking:

Path 1: Go back to CSUS to complete my B.S. in Business Administration, but overall GPA would be very low @ 2.5 would take 3-4 more semesters. Then I would do a post-bachelor for medical school.

Path 2: Start off new at this one community college (I do have 21 units there @ 3.0 GPA) and transfer to a different university doing pre-med. This would probably take me 7-8 semesters.

So if you were in my situation which path would you take? And one more thing, would I be considered an underrepresented minority if I am Asian but came from poor parents that are both disable? I won’t be the first child to graduate college first though, got a younger brother that will finish before me. Thanks for reading this long post and your responses would be greatly appreciate. Thank you.

I admire the fact that you are going back to finish your undergrad. I think you should have a backup plan to med school … even with a 3.0 you won’t find many med schools that are interested. Is your interest in medicine something that can be satisfied by a nursing or med technician skill? Whether your GPA is 2.5 or 3.0, you have to report all the college classes you’ve taken. You would need excellent grades (all A’s) from here on out and some really strong recommendations from someone very connected to the med school to have them look past your grades. The other hurdle for you is the MCAT … are you aware of how you would do on that or what your strengths/weaknesses are?

Being Asian regardless of your circumstances would not be considered a URM, especially in med school admissions where given the sheer number of Asian applicants you might be considered “over” represented. The number of Asian applicants is high and very self selecting making competition for Asian applicants very selective.

As the previous poster has stated, ALL your course work from all schools must be submitted and looking at what you have stated already, it appears that you are more likely to have an overall GPA under 3.0. This will make your path quite difficult.

You’re going to literally need to get all As from this point forward, especially in science classes, put together a strong list of medically related ECs, get VERY strong LORs and absolutely kill the MCAT. After that you will need to do a post bacc program to try to strengthen your overall profile. Even with all that, you may still not be very competitive for allopathic Med schools but could compete for a spot in DO schools.

Given your past performance, are you being realistic that this could even happen?
