Need recommendations for a heater

I am having a hard time finding a heater that I am looking for. I need one to warm a small studio apartmet, so basically one room that’s maybe 200-300 sq ft to 73 degrees when the weather gets cold (I am in NYC). This is a very old building with tiny cracks in the walls, etc., so I definitely need something that’s powerful enough to heat the room and maintain the temperature.

Safety is a huge concern. I would prefer a heater that I could leave on when I go to work, but I know there is probably nothing safe enough to do that. Still, safety is really important.

Finally, I am looking for a heater made in the US, which is proving very difficult to find.

My price range is around $100. I will go as high as $200. I can’t really go much higher than that, but I will definitely hear suggestions.

We have used a couple of these in various places in our house with decent luck:

We use one in our sunporch which is probably about 200 square feet - it has a timer dial on it so we set it to go on early in the morning for a couple of hours, go off during the day when we would be at work and come back on a little bit before we would come home and then be on all evening . You could set it to go on and off multiple times during the day or night. Not sure this would be the right solution if you want to heat the room continually.

I have a bedroom with multi windows, roughly 200 sf. The room radiator is the end point on an old steam system. This room has never been warm. Space heaters that blew hot air only worked in the small radius around them. Last winter, got a Lasko 5624. Has a digital thermostat and timer and worked like a charm. Not expensive- in the $50-60 range. I could run it below 1500 watts and it didn’t seem as costly to run. seemed to be quick to warm the room. Every night, I thanked myself for this purchase. I am getting a second for another room.

I bought a ceramic space heater that is safe to the (brief) touch, has automatic shut-off if it overheats, and will automatically shut off if it tips over. I think it was a Hunnewell and was about $55. It doesn’t have a thermostat, but I paid for safety instead of neat features.

I think your landlord is required to have heat available to keep your room at a certain temperature during the winter. Before purchasing a heater check your state and local tenant regulations. Here’s a link to the NYC regulation:
