Through the search of picking an essay that would enrich in my acceptance in college. I went back and forth redrafting essays after essays until I found the essential college essay question for me. A person that influences me was one of the few essays that attributed to me, the most because then I could write so much about my influential parents, grandparents etc. But, through the process, I realized that I wanted to be different, and could not write an essay that many applicants would respond to, I had to think outside the box, so I decided to write about a character in nonfiction/creative work that had has an influence on me. In the summer of 2010, my hand fell upon a book called A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah which was a memoir of a depiction of the firsthand account of the decade- long civil war in Sierra Leone and the ongoing plight of child soldiers in conflicts worldwide. Now, some may wonder, why choose a book about war? Well, despite the fact that this book dealt with the striking pain of war in Sierra Leone, what drove me to choose this person was the connection I had with him. I was born in west Africa sierra Leone as he was, and even as a little child, I witnessed the same cruelty acts that Ishmael witnessed such as piled bodies on the floor and scrutinizing scene of watching our friends and family members die right in front o f our eyes. After reading his book, I got so much power and strength to move forth with my life, still remember the lost lives, but still be able to move forward in life and succeed despite those flaming pictures in my mind, body and soul.
