BB 2nd edition page 708 Practice exam #6 section 3

Here it is:
The citizens of Macondo were distressed by the arrival of the telephone because they
C. Could envision the changes it would bring to daily village life
D. no longer felt able to make the usual assumptions about their world

The answer is D. I chose C… Why am I wrong?

Thanks in advance! :)

Read through lines 40-50 carefully. There is nothing in the passage to suggest that the citizens envisioned telephones bringing changes to their daily life. I believe the answer “not able to make the usual assumptions about their world” refers to the sentence “It was as if God had decided to put to the test every capacity for surprise and was keeping the inhabitants of Macondo in a permanent alternation between excitement and disappointment, doubt and revelation, to such an extreme that no one knew for certain where the limits of reality lay.”

The last line “no one knew where the limits of reality lay” seems particularly telling to me. If you thought you had a firm understanding of what was possible in the world and what wasn’t, and then some sort of technological breakthrough shattered that understanding - it would make sense that you could no longer make any assumptions about the reality of your world.

Hope this helps!

:D Got it! Thanks! :D
