Need shoe advice

I have a fairly severe case of [pes cavus foot](Cavus Foot – High-Arched Foot | Foot Health Facts - Foot Health Facts), in my case, inherited from my dad. I’ve just gotten custom orthotics, which are doing a wonderful job of correcting it. My problem now is shoes.

I’m good with the podiatrist-recommended Asics athletic shoes, but dress shoes for work are going to be a problem. I can’t wear pumps or loafers; my feet simply won’t stay in any shoe which doesn’t encase (or strap over) the top part of my foot. Heels are verboten, as are insubstantial shoes like sandals or ballet flats. Boots might work for our short California winter, but not when it hits 100 degrees.

Help! Is there such a thing as a professional-looking shoe which would also work with my foot problem? It doesn’t need to be gorgeous or fashion-forward, but I’d like it if it didn’t scream “orthotics inside!”

I have mostly worn black SAS walking shoes much of my professional life with dark slacks and dressy tops and blazers. I have very high arches, wide toe box and narrow heels. The walking shoes are the most comfortable, especially when I end up having to walk considerable distances. I have also bought a few other pairs of shoes, but can only wear them where I won’t do much walking.

I have also bought some Clarks and browse at Walking Company, to see if the have shoes that are comfortable. It is a struggle, as I can’t wear heels, nor shoes that don’t lace up or have a strap across to keep the shoe on my foot.

Have you tried Naot or Joseph Seibel shoes? Both are available at Nordstrom and Zappos. They are quite comfortable and have a strap on many versions that may work with your needs.

Do Mary Jane style shoes work? http://www.zappos.com/naturalizer-referee-black-leather
http://www.zappos.com/merrell-dassie-mj-black
http://www.zappos.com/aetrex-essence-theresa-black

or is that not enough?

You might try a place like shoesforcrews.com, which has shoes for restaurant workers, nurses, and others who are on their feet in sometimes hazardous conditions. They are designed for comfort and not all of them are ugly.

I have foot problems and have found that Munro shoes, while expensive and not particularly gorgeous, are a solid choice. They come in many widths and have removable insoles so they will accommodate orthotics. Here’s one style

Ahnu “Jackie” style have fantastic support and accommodate a high arch. I think they carry them at REI and they are often available online at significant discount. The inserts can be removed but not sure how they would work with orthotics.

Consider Aravon by New Balance http://www.newbalance.com/women/shoes/casuals/aravon-by-new-balance-1/

Check out Cole Haan (or other brand oxfords) or Reiker shoes. The Reikers tend to be good on narrower feet.

Some Ecco shoes might work also.

Best of luck!

check out www.comfortology.com
They fit problem feet. Sometimes they have free shipping, which is always the best.

However, I have found if you go to a really good independent shoe store (they still exist!) who can measure your feet & make suggestions…it would be worth it to pay more for them. Munro, Naot, Ros Hommerson & Trotters are all brands I have been fitted properly for and buy, especially when they are on sale!

^^Oops. I see that comfortology has now merged with www.footsmart.com
The other thing I have done is just go into a local DSW show warehouse and ask a sales person to help you. They have steered me toward comfortable styles, Naturalizer, etc.

I would take the orthotics to a larger Nordstrom and ask for a sales person knowledgeable with dress shoes that take orthotics. For example, our downtown Seattle store is great in this aspect. Some smaller stores have more limited selection of brands, and therefore your choices would be limited.
I would skip the Walking Company. Their stores have been disappointing lately. They became focused on just a few brands and push heavily their own brand that has “custom” orthotics that they make in the store.

On Sunday, I will take my friend shopping for ladies’ shoes that accommodate very high arches. I will post out findings!

Yeah, I’m not too impressed with the walking company either. I was desperate, so I allowed the sales person to sell me shoes, that were really too small. I took them back the next day.
I have better luck online, after reading lots and lots of reviews.

Alegria - shoes designed for nurses with very comfortable removable insoles. Check out the online shoe store for their “close-outs”

Oh wow. I really didn’t expect much response to this question, so thank you all! I’ll try to respond to everyone, since I so appreciate your posts. But first, no one needs to apologize for the prices of any of these shoes. I’ve already resigned myself to the fact that my cheap-shoes days are over. And my cute-shoes days never really happened. I’m fashion-impaired anyway, and shoes never really grabbed my imagination at all. So at least I’m not starting from a point of “They MUST be fabulous.” I’m just hoping to avoid “ugly and out of place for work.”

@HImom - The SAS shoes probably wouldn’t work at my office (though I will try them – you never know!). But I think they’d fill that space in between tennies and work, which I also need.

@parent15‌ - I actually think the Naot “Kedma” might work. I wear my pants long, and they’d cover the laces, so it could look kind of like a boot. “Talas” is also a possibility.

@Singersmom07‌ - I have to admit I’ve never been a fan of Mary Janes, but as I said, my thinking about shoes is rapidly changing. My podiatrist, a young woman, was wearing something like the third link last time I went in, and they actually didn’t look too bad. It’s now a possibility.

@sylvan8798‌ - Even though I’m not crew, surprisingly, I see one or two there that might work.

@zipyourlips‌ - Thanks for the Munro referral. How cute are these?http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/munro-fran-zebra-stripe-flat-women/3793404?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=ZEBRA+PRINT&resultback=1900

@momsquad‌ - Those might work for the office, and would definitely work as a cross-over.

@DeniseC‌ - The “Phyllis” is really cute. I’ll have to see if I can wear any heel at all.

@travelnut‌ - On top of the super high arch, my feet are really wide at the ball, so unfortunately the Reikers probably wouldn’t work. But I did find a very cute ECCO ankle boot.

@chocchipcookie‌ - My doctor gave me the names of two independent shoes stores in this area to try. I wouldn’t dare buy shoes online sight unseen; I’m just too difficult to fit. I know I’m going to have to drastically increase my shoe budget.

@BunsenBurner‌ - Let me know how the expedition on Sunday goes! BTW, I’m going to be in Seattle in April. I’ll see if I can squeeze in a trip to the downtown Nordie.

@anxiousmom‌ - Some of the Alegria mary janes are really cute. I’m not quite sure if they’d work at the office – maybe they would – but another good cross-over option.

LasMa, will do! The poor woman tried every suitably looking shoe at the Walking Company store… none fit!

I have a version of this shoe. The insoles are removable, and Munro makes very comfortable heels (plus, their shoes are available in several widths):

http://www.6pm.com/munro-american-jenna-black-kid-black-texture

Taryn Rose is supposed to be another comfortable brand (tho I have never found her footwear to be comfortable). I’ve mostly ended up sticking with walking shoes and Thorlo socks, as that combo has worked the best for me over the years.

@BunsenBurner I like those! I think I could handle a small wedge.

@HImom‌ - One thing in the back of my mind has been our cruise in September and what shoes I could possibly wear in the dining room. These seem like a possibility: http://www.tarynrose.com/sandals/ion-in-white

Nordstrom’s carries Taryn Rose. I always WANTED to find them comfortable but sadly they never fit my feet properly.

I have two M unro’s, and one is my favorite shoe.
