I’m a sophmore, I spent my freshman year trying to get into the music school, but failed both auditions. I figured I was good at science so I’d go into Biomedical Engineering while I was trying to get into the music school, because Engineering is a very practical degree, I figured I’d be good at it, and I could probably help more people going into science anyways, but I still really want to get into the music school anyways to study music, so I took a job to pay for my lessons, and I’m taking 18 hours, and I think I’m going to fail a lot of them. I missed a couple classes and turned in some really cruddy homework and quizzes. As for tests I got an 85 on my first chem test and a 92 in Calculus 2, but I got a 60 on my physics test, and I don’t know what I got on my Matlab test but I know it probably wasn’t good and I’m trying to sit down and do my homework/study because I know that’s what I need to do, but problem after problem I don’t know how to do, and I’m looking at my teachers notes, the textbook, and my review book and I still don’t understand, and I’m starting to panic, and I feel like crying, and my suitemate who’s a freshman and also declared engineering is having trouble to and she started crying last night, and this isn’t the first time this has happened this semester, and I just don’t know what to do my mom will be very unhappy if I fail some classes we got into a huge fight over the summer because she just overheard me telling my brother I was worried about my GPA because I wasn’t doing so well in some music classes not failing just a C plus, and I’m crying and I can’t stop and I don’t know how to get this under control because I need to do my homework and review the material but I don’t understand it and I can’t stop crying. I really do want to be an engineer and I am good at science and math but I took to many courses and missed a couple assignments/classes and I don’t know how to catch up

How I get back on the ball when I don’t understand something: doing problems. Lots of them. When I don’t know how to do some part, I look in the book, but I plow through anyway.

Check to see if your school has a tutoring center or study groups for the classes you find difficult. For those late-night-before-an-exam moments, you could try online resources such as InstaEDU (for specific questions) or online videos. Be vigilant about going to class. You have good things going in Chem & Calc, so don’t get down on yourself.
