Need suggestions where to apply! [TX resident, 3.9 GPA, 1400 SAT, <$20k, psychology]

Texas! Thank you! Will add these!

Obviously, you have a lot of great in state options - and when you have a tight budget, that’s where you go. And you might look at an LSU or Arkansas or New Mexico.

For smaller a Truman State in Missouri can get close.

There re also some privates that have tables - for example at Rice - if you are $75-140K in income, you get free tuition (as long as assets are at the level they deem normal as well).

Other schools run similar programs.

I do think regional schools - maybe in Texas or Louisiana (like Louisiana Lafayette or La Tech, etc) or a Central Arkansas type - might be ones worth looking at.

Over 1K from Texas are at Alabama - so your son wouldn’t be alone either - so that’s the issue.

I don’t see a UVM like school coming close financially - but you never know. I think there are some SUNys that, maybe won’t come to the #, but likely not far far off.

Sorry my thoughts/ideas don’t include the sport.

Good luck.

Not to hijack the thread so apologies OP but poster not accepting DMs.

My kid was a proud and active member of one of these highly competitive teams at Brown. Please feel free to use me as a resource.

Unfortunately, Brown doesn’t offer merit or athletic scholarships so if you want cheap, there are other posters expert in that space.

Is it possible Brown would be affordable with need based aid?

@TonyGrace would coach support help with acceptance?

In this case I don’t believe so, other than AOs will recognize the EC as something needed in their community. He needs to be competitive (ie get those test scores up) on his own.

At other schools coaches might not officially recruit, but give “soft support”.

OP, we just visited Vassar and they seem to have a very strong and thriving ultimate community.

Based on what you’ve shared, I’d think that U. of Houston and U. of Texas - Dallas would be big contenders. If he’s in the top 6% of his class, then UT-Austin, too. U. of Houston should be just within budget at sticker price, but he’d need some scholarship money from UTD.

U. of Arkansas would probably run about $23-24k, even with 90% off the out-of-state the out-of-state fee that your son would qualify for (source). I don’t know if they give additional scholarships on top of that, though. If they don’t, it’s over budget.

U. of Louisiana - Lafayette would meet your budget for at least the first two years with your son’s current scores (the Magnolia scholarship offers about $5300/year the first two years for dorms), but if your son can boost his SAT by 20 points, he’d get free room and board for all four years (source).

Since you’re describing your son as a progressive, I don’t know how he would feel about Florida, but he might be able to get an out-of-state waiver at U. of South Florida, U. of Central Florida, or Florida Gulf Coast, though USF might still end up being just over budget.

I’d also look at the scholarships (and NPCs if they ask for academic stats) for state flagships in flyover country. Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, the Dakotas, Wyoming, etc. Also, places like Grand Valley State in MI or Bowling Green State in OH.

Best of luck to your son!

@Mirb I can’t say for UH specifically, but there’s a very active Ultimate Frisbee community in & around greater Houston.
So UH, Rice and University of St. Thomas (small, but minutes from Rice, Med Center & Museum District ) would all be worth checking out.

For applicants to Texas public universities, class rank is highly important.
